I have a RAM mount for my VAIO UX in my truck and it is awesome... I am looking for some mounting options for the Z1 and or the P in my truck also. I know RAM makes some great mounts but their laptop mounts seem to be generic and clunky.

Does anyone know of a product that would be a perfect custom fit for either one of these computers

For you Cowboy I would suggest a bikini clad booth babe!
Sorry - I've got nothing of substance.

Design and availability of any new mounting equipment is going to be influenced by this. Legit companies that want to limit their product liability exposure can't afford to ignore it, even in draft.

That is interesting Louche. So you are saying that the reason I have such a good custom mounting option for the UX is because it was older?

I am going to call RAM and see what they say.

EDIT: they don't really answer the phone...
The best thing I can find on their site is http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogRes...45086066045049056053045083087049/Default.aspx

This is not custom to the laptop at all, meh. It is a good fit for my truck though.

^That's my guess. The proposed rule hasn't been out that long and is a way from being final so I don't want to overstate the case. On the other hand, the issue of consumer electronics and distracted driving has been around for a while and has been getting more and mroe attention, which is why the proposed rule came out in the first place.

My take is that any manufacturer/seller in the US had better have a long talk with their product liability lawyers before coming out with new laptop mounting brackets for drivers.

Of course, the other reason why the equipment you want may not be available is that the popularity of laptops has taken a hit as drivers use smartphones and onboard electronics.

^ I'm not going to put it on the dash...

I know it is ridiculous to mount three computers next to me in my truck... but I like ridiculous.

I plan to have one showing real time gauges from OBD2, one showing GPS maps, and IDK what I'll put on the other facebook perhaps (joking)

I like ridiculous too; the world needs more ridiculous.
I had a quick look around and you're right about the clunkiness.
Again - that's not much help.

I have actually been looking for a method of tidying up my desk for a while.
It doubles as our dining table so I've been looking for a way to get the laptop up off the book it sits on and neaten up the Squeezebox Touch, a DAC and the Z2.
I've always thought a laptop arm would look a bit to 'corporate' but I haven't had any luck with alternatives so I dived into a bit of research tonight and found that there are some reasonable solutions that might help you too.
I know this is an Australian site but have a browse though these options and see if something approaches suitability.

Three computers in your truck but no cameras? You may as well as set-up a mini automated studio in there so you can give lectures and interviews while driving.

I think I am going to buy the universal laptop mount... and the universal netbook mount from RAM.

On the laptop mount I am going to see if I can glue a Z1 docking station to it. That would be great to have it docked and mounted.
