I've just purchased a VAIO CW2 (VPCCW2S1E) and did a format and fresh install of Windows 7 x64 to rid myself of all the bloatware. The problem is that copying to, from and between external USB flash/harddrives is now extremely slow - often a couple of hundred kb/s, and sometimes 2-3 Mb/s, when the speed should be 20 Mb/s+. I've had the drives for a while and they work flawlessly over USB 2.0 with other computers. I know that USB copying speed was normal before the format as I copied the Windows\drivers folder to a USB harddrive, though that folder was only a few hundred Mb.

I assume I missed installing some USB chipset driver after the format, though I have installed the following:

    1. IPS_Driver_1.0_10Q1_O_1.0.0.1030 (unsure what this is)
    2. SATA_Driver_Intel_Non-RAID_8.9X64_E_8.9.4.1004
    3. SFEP_Driver_Sony_8.0_10Q1_O_7_8.0.1.1 (unsure what this is)

The list of available drivers is here: http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/preinstalled/index.aspx?l=en_GB&m=VPCCW2S1E_W

I've installed Windows 7 on a fair number of computers and never had this problem; how typical then that it should happen on my own laptop

Any ideas are much appreciated - thanks!

Download and install *these* chipset drivers from Intel. They're newer than the ones supplied by Sony and *should solve your problem. If not report back, and I'll try to suggest something else.

Thanks but I'm afraid that didn't do it, and the installer doesn't work right. The process starts fine with the classic Windows sound for new hardware detected etc, but then the screen flickers a few times and finally goes blank forcing me to hard shut-down after a few minutes of waiting. I redid it with the -overall parameter with the same result. If I try to install it without the -overall parameter it says it's installed however.

I've experimented a bit with the 3 USB ports and one is actually working (more or less, but not all the time) at the normal speed. Looking at the laptop head-on there is 1 port on the top-right side and 2 ports on the bottom-left side. The one that's working is closest to the front on the left side. Not sure why this is; certainly the 2 left-hand side side ports should be attached to the same controller and thus run at the same speed.

    Appreciate any further ideas.

Try going to the Device manager and simply uninstalling all of your USB root hubs and such and restarting and letting Windows 7 re-detect and re-install the root drivers.

I have been having the same problem. I reinstalled USB drivers etc... I tried copying files from external Hard Drive, the speed is good for few seconds and slows down. The hard drive works well with every other computer. I even got a Y- USB cable so that the power from USB is not an issue.

I hope someone comes up with a solution as I cannot return this computer.

What kinds of speeds are you seeing for the few seconds it's fast? And what speeds does it come down to?

It actually works the same for me most of the time - starts at a good 18 Mb/s and works it way down to a Mb/s or two. Other times it starts at the slow end. No consistency, just to make troubleshooting more difficult...

Not sure if reinstallation of USB drivers will fix it as per jaimac's post, but there's no point in speculating and I'll try it next week.

Actually the removal of all USB devices followed by a restart and automatic detection by Windows worked... USB speed is as it should. Many many thanks for the help with the issue :)
