I used to have a Vaio Z before it got smashed on the highway two days ago. I did not like the stock 2x64GB RAID 0 configuration because it would stutter at times (I have a very demanding workflow).

I see that the Vaio Z has a regular 500GB option. Is this 500GB a regular 2.5"? As far as I know there are no 1.8" 500GB drives. If the 500GB Vaio Z can hold a 2.5" drive, what's stopping me from taking it out and putting in a single 2.5" 128GB Indilinx drive or the like that doesn't stutter?

I know that one can replace the stock RAID SSD configuration with other 1.8" SSDs, as long as you remove the cases on those SSDs and purchase a special micro SATA connector.

the 500 GB HDD option replaces the DVD drive, which people have done already, supplementing sony's storage solution with their own SSD/HDD. So, yeah nothing is stopping you from replacing the DVD drive =p. I've never experienced any stuttering on my drives... or heard of that being a widespread problem, maybe you got some faulty ones?
