The bottom right contains the hard drive, which is a mechanical device that spins up magnetic platters from time to time. Vibration should be within reasonable limits, but you can check the status of the drive using SMART software.

yea i get the same vibrartion on my new FW285 .. its slightly annoying because i would of thought there wouldnt be any on a brand new laptop... If i apply pressure the noise stops.. like if i have my wrist on it. Its a 7200rpm hd so maybe this is why?

You could try inserting a piece of styrofoam or something to cushion the drive... sometimes a simple fix is the best fix.

it might be the hard drive and not the unit.

i had five of them that i went through..

my hitachi hard drive was the quiet compared to the fujistu that some units had.

but when i took the laptop apart in the HDD part there is a lot of room for movement and vibration in there

I wouldn't recommend cpu upgrades to laptops...ever. The Ram and HDD can be upgraded and our great ways of getting improved performance on the cheap

yeh i woudln't bother upgrading a CPU in a laptop. well really depends..

if it has the same thermal output etc.

Also the way sony's bios are constructed they are so limited, who knows what they block.

we already know they block Virtualization on the p8400

CPU upgrade = too expensive in 99% of all "normal" laptops.
(I think some people did some significant upgrades on laptops like Sager etc.)

RAM - yes you can upgrade it, but ask yourself first if you need it.
Don't upgrade if you don't need it, also because in a few weeks/months time RAM will be cheaper already...

Just got a microsoft wireless mouse, the weight of the wireless usb thing makes the vibration happen. I beleive the sound is the usb part inside computer touching the h/d. If u slightly move the microsoft stubby thing that hangs out of the usb up and down it makes the sounds happen and dissappear. The worst thing is even without touching it, the weight of the microsoft wireless adapter eventually makes the vibration noise happen. This really sucks and the computer is going to have to be brought back because i need a wireless mouse :(

    Bleutooth Mouse :D
-> Logitech - Wireless Reciever is light.

But still, this shouldn't happend - any FW users that can comment?

While I can't expect a "cargo hook" - a USB ports shouldn't really move around under normal usage...
