Firstly my setup:
I have a Vaio SZ650n and a docking station.
The docking station is connected to my external 22" monitor via dvi. (Same problem with D-SUB)
Resolution is 1680x1050
I'm running Vista SP1, but repro's without SP1
I've also tried out several drivers and they all have had the same problem....
The Problem:
When I have my laptop connected to my external monitor the display is slower.
Choppy video play back when full screen, slow scrolling in IE, just general rubbish video performance.
Does anybody else have the same issues? Or did you have the same issues and have them resolved?
Any ideas or help? This is driving me nuts!

I have the exact opposite issue with my Lenovo T61 and XP/NVidia card. Not that this will help you or I solve our sad situations. But when I alt-tab it's so slow I could die... takes 2 seconds for the window to refresh! Grrrr!!!!! I'm ready to throw it out the window sonetimes (no pun intended).
Like they say "We are not alone".... sympathies bro! -
Why dont you try an option where the notebook's resolution is similar to it.
I.e. Your 15 inch laptop has a maximum of 1280x800.
Set your external monitor to 1280x1024, or 1280x800 if it is a widescreen.
*Several Driver issue.
Have you tried out the 167.43 laptopvideo2go.com driver? (In the case of Vista X86)
This driver is a major improvement from its previous drivers.

Yeah, when I resize to 1280x800 same resolution as the laptop screen, it is fine, just like the standard performance.
When running at the native resolution of the external screen the performance is dead.
What I don't get is that it should be fine based on specs of the gpu... maybe the card on the laptop just doesn't have enough memory....
Running the 167.43 drivers and they are fantastic compared to everything else... just a shame about the external monitor higher resolution performance. -
i was running mine to a 27" lcd and no problems using vga at a higher res
Video slow down with external monitor?
