This is the Windows Vista desktop icon for "My Computer":

I want to change that icon on my desktop from a PC tower to a notebook computer, but nothing in Vista's icon cache resembles a notebook.

Anyone have some icons they can post? I've searched around and am finding nothing.

    TIA

    BJ

You've got a perfectly good looking SZ laptop icon as your avatar - photoshop that and save it as .gif? then you've got your own icon :p

so essentially you could take you own pics resize and convert them then use them as icons.

True, but I want my icons to match and so I'm looking for a stylized one like the default tower image. That blue screen, the shadowing, etc.

I have laptop icon in some dll... Right click on desktop - customize - change desktop icons (up on the left) - (choose my computer) - change icon - there you'll find it (I hope)

Find the laptop icon for me and I will grant you one wish. I cannot locate it in any .dll.

-Search "Show or hide common icons on the desktop" (or just icon) under control panel.
-Click on "my computer" and select change icon.
-Scroll until you see the lappy.

tada! (unless your system is an oddball...)

You have a fav pic of your VAIO you'd like as an icon? link me to them and you might get a surprise.

EDIT: The avatar was made with CS2 and Iconworkshop. There are some icons other users made on this forum and others that are amazing.

    Great!

Please take your avatar, reverse it (so that the screen faces towards the right) and make that into an .ico with a transparent background.

And thank you very much in advance.

OK. I'm going home now to work on it, but are you sure you want the X505 in my avatar and not a SZ460?

    Go... http://www.filefactory.com/file/daf165/

There's the X505 you wanted and an older SZ-160 icon I made awhile ago. Plus a bonus icon I use for adults only (^_^)

EDIT: You will notice I couldn't just flip the X505 horizontally because the wording would look backwards so I just flipped the screen and corrected the perspective, the rest is backwards (>_<).

EDIT #2: Tell me how they look with VISTA cause I don't have a way to test. Any adjustments?

First off, bravo on a job well done. Secondly, here's what your handiwork looks like on a Vista desktop. Very nice to have my SZ looking back at me from My Computer.

    Thanks again!

    You mean like that?

EDIT: Or does the shadow need lighter? Maybe diff angle?

First off, thanks for the redo with the drop shadow.

If you look at my desktop snip (above) and look at the iTunes icon, you'll see a pretty dramatic and noticable shadow under the southwest corner of the CD. That's sort of the effect I was looking for on the SZ icon.

    Thanks again!

Yeah, I did research on the VISTA icon shadow angle and I looked at the other icons on your screenshot there and found you have shadows going to diff angles like there are multiple light sources. So in the end I picked an angle that was neutral to fit all angles. Not perfect, but you have an assortment of diff style icons there, some with no shadows and the recycle one the opposite direction. If I make the shadow like you want I’d have to extend the transparent area to the southwest area of the SZ which would also make the non-transparent area smaller, as a result the icon will be visually smaller. An example is the one I made from the images user hpl912 picked. The icons need to have an equal amount of horizontal and vertical pixels (VISTA 256x256) or they will look squashed. Even though I made the Vaio FE the same size as yours (256x256) it will look smaller overall when he/she uses it because of the empty transparent spaces (top & bottom).

Tell me if that's what you want and I'll email the files again.

Ah, well I wouldn't want to do anything to make the icon smaller, so let's change direction slightly.

Forget the drop shadow and let's talk some light-colored highlights.

My image (above) shows the SZ on a light background where the dark grey color pops nicely. But on a dark colored wallpaper, the SZ disappears due to it's grey darkness. Instead of shadows, can you add some off-white highlights around the edges? On a dark wallpaper it would give it some much-needed 'pop'.

    Thanks.

In that same properties box where you can change icons (refer to earlier posts) it is in Row 1, col no. 29.

Now grant me a wish. :D
