Hello All,
Its been a couple of days since i have had the Vaio Z with me. I am happy with the notebook overall, GREAT weight and construction, its a MADE IN JAPAN unit and its my first Sony. Now i like to use the system configuration to the max there are a few things i would like to do with my config.
First of all do a fresh installation of the OS, upgarde the RAM and if i still feel its slower than my XPS 1530 then upgrade the hard drive to a 7200 rpm unit.
I was thinking of ordering a 64 bit version of Vista Business from Microsoft but i want to make sure i have the drivers before i go ahead and ask Microsoft to send me a copy of the OS.
My Vaio Z config:
Intel Centrino2 P8600
2 GB DDR 3 RAM
250 GB @ 5400 rpm Hard Drive
Hybrid Graphics with nvidia 9300 GS 128 MB
1366x768 Dura View Display

You can download unsupported x64 driver from Sony using the following link:
http://www.vaio-link.com/os/vista/64bit/
Although the link has no drivers explicitly for Vaio Z, you can hopefully find some useful drivers useful for Vaio Z here. Please try and share with us the result. -
Maybe we can make this thread "official" so we can share our progress
Most of the drivers you get directly from Intel, be aware you choose the 64 bit driver. Works for the chipset and Intel graphic.
But my first problem the nvidia graphic card. I cannot find the right driver for this. So please, if you find the right 64 bit driver for the 9300M GS, please give us a hint.
Thank you -
Try this link for the 9300M driver:
http://www.opendrivers.com/driver/2...r-176.15-windows-vista-x64-free-download.html -
Thanks mate, but I tried this driver, doesn't work. There seems to be a problem with the stamina/speed switch...
In the device manager you see 2 graphic cards, the intel mobile 4, and another vga device which shows me a yellow error. And in the error message it says the device is not active or so. So it seems the switch isn't recognized. I did the same steps like in the 32 bit Vista clean install, first the Intel chipset installation, then put the Z in Stamina Mode, install the graphic driver for the Intel graphic board, and after that switch to speed and do the same for the NVidia graphic card. This does not work under Vista 64.
So has anyone got around this issue? -
I have the same notebook and also trying to install Vista 64bit, and meet the same problem.
I successful installed GeForce 9300gs driver. In the device manager, video adapter named "GeForce 9300gs", but still have yellow label and does not work. Switch "Stamina-Speed" does not work to.
I think switch "Stamina-Speed" is software, not hardware.
I will try to install clean Vista 32bit than add Sony`s soft&drives one by one, for find what control this switch. -
Video Driver from Sony for Vista32 GRAPHICS DRIVER NVIDIA 7.15W _ 7.15.11.7449.ZIP has driver for both (!) video controller, and Intel 4, and GeForce 9300.
Switch Stamina-Speed works after installation this driver. But for switch graphics card you need reboot. Online switch graphics card provide "Sony Notebook Controller Device" driver.
So.. we need driver for GF9300. I think - it modified driver -
Any updates on this being a possibility.
If anyone has found a 100 compatibillity please post the drivers.
Im sure it will get the Z to work much faster. -
Any news on compatible drivers for 64 bit vista?
-
I try clean install of Vista 64bit in my VAIO Z notebook.
One problem I cannot solve is the NVIDIA display driver which is custom by Sony, but I think one day we will have the x64 released by Sony.
Now I have to use Intel display driver which the index is 3.8 instead of 4.4 when using NVIDIA.
Below is the list of drivers that included in the rar files:

You may have one or two devices different from VGN-Z17GN/B.
Not all the drivers are from Sony, but they work with the notebook I have.
Good luck. -
@fredguy, thanks for posting.
i tried installing vista x64 sp1, but the installer detects that the Z has EFI (InsydeH2O) instead of BIOS and refuses to install on a non GPT disk. but if i convert disk to GPT the EFI cannot boot: "operating system not found".
How did you install Vista x64? -
I installed Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 (not upgrade) on HD that comes with Z and also on the new 7200rpm HD that I swarp with the original Z HD without the problem you have. May be some experts in this forum could help you.
-
interesting... it seems i am doing the same thing: vista ultimate x64 sp1 (no upgrade) on a clean HD, etc.
Just wondering: when you start up your Z, press F2 to get to BIOS.
Do you see this:
InsydeH2O Setup Utility Rev.3.5
Below there are 4 tabs - MAIN/Security/Boot/Exit
On the MAIN tab:
BIOS version: R1280M3
EC Version: K1230M3
Machine name ....
Serial number....
UUID....
Do you have the same BIOS/embedded controller version? -
I have different Bios version R1280M2 and the reset are the same.
InsydeH2O Setup Utility Rev.3.5
BIOS version: R1280M2
EC Version: K1230M3 -
well that's the difference right there.

question to Mr Fredguy.
i had my Z590, trying to get vista64 bit too. so if i download all the files you provided everything should fine for the PC running no error? excepted the Nvidia graphic card right? how about the software of 64 bit, do with need 64 bit software or can be used by both 32 and 64? are you using crack to activate windows or you bought licence?
thanks -
Hi covid,
You can run both 32 & 64 bit, but there are some rare exceptional case.
If you have other hardware make sure your hardware comes with MS certified x64 driver. If not you can run Vista in testing mode with the help of "dseo10.exe".
Now a day there are may native 64bit sotfware in the market.
I bought an OEM Vista Ultimate it around HKD1,600. -
wow, how much in Hong Kong Dollar convert to american Dollar? that arround 300 dollars? my major software, i am not really worry about it, cos all the autodesk company is making both 32 and 64 bit. the reason i wanna swith to 64 bit, cos i saw the review from microsoft and from my 3ds max teacher told me to try upgrad, then my work will flow... is it really made change of the speed of working?
i checked my BIOS version last nigh after finished reading your post. my z is contain the same version as you had. so it would not be a problem to run it right? do you have any solution to get the Nvidia graphic work yet?
How to start to clean up my pc before installing the 64 bit. i meant, i never done the clean install before, i only know how to back up all my file, and do the recovery. the rest, i need more help.
thanks. -
you meant, go to vaio recovery center, and do the completely formate the c drive? then start putting the Vista boot disc in the drive, then restart the pc right? do that way the X drive that contain the recovery will be gone too or what?
thanks -
You better make two recovery DVD first and back up all your data. before doing anything.
Change your BIOS to boot optical drive first and direct boot from Vista x64 disc.
After input the product key,you have chance to re-partition and format your HD. Don't touch you recovery partition, so it is safe.
There is a thread clean install Vista for Z 32 bit go though it, install 64 bit is the same as install 32 bit system. The only difference is you install 64 bit drivers. -
@fredguy,
do you know the date of your BIOS. Mine (version R1280M3) is dated July-15-2008 according to Everest. Also, do you have VT enabled in your BIOS?
Thanks. -
I just got my vaio Z series and was disappointed to see that it runs 32bit vista.
I have several questions. has anyone tried this NVIDIA driver for 64bit Vista:
NVIDIA GeForce Release 178.13 WHQL?
It is supposed to support GeForce 9300 GS. I have Geforce 9300M GS on my vaio. I wonder if it will work?
Do I need 64bit drivers for the BlueRay drive, or do they come with the OS? i may be fine not using the NVIDIA card for a while but I'd pissed off if I cannot use the CD/DVD/BR drive.
Thanks,
goranov -
You cannot find x64 GeForce driver that work for 9300M in Z.
I don'thave BlueRay drive in Z, so not sure, but I haven't seen driver for Blueray drive suppose you don't need it.
You can download the following x64 driver from Sony in the link below.
1. Alps pointing device
2. Ricoh® SD Memory Card Driv
3. Ricoh® Memory Stick® Media Driver
4. Conexant® Modem Driver
These are newer than the one in rapidhare and it works with Z.
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFW170JW®ion_id=1 -
Thanks!
I had a hard time extracting parts 2 and 3 of the rar driver files. Has anyone else had a similar problem?
I gives me an error midway through the extraction.
goranov -
No unmodified geforce drivers will work on the Z series cause the deault driver is a sony modified version containing both the gefroce driver and teh intel integrated driver.
From my experimentation the geforce chip will not work even when it has the correct driver when the intel is running off official (non sony default) drivers.
This happens to both 32bit and 64bit. -
I spoke on the phone with Sony and I (as expected) did not get a clear answer as to when a 64bit version of the NVIDEA driver will be released. I was advised to watch the website for the availability of 64-bit drivers.
I wonder how long that wait will be.
goranov -
so i had to reinstall the stock driver.. -
Those wacky custom NVIDIA drivers were finally posted on the Sony Japan FTP yesterday. Just installed them, and my stamina-speed switch is finally working!
Get 'em while they're hot...
ftp://vug.vaio.sony.co.jp/pub/oth/64/EP0000159633.zip -
sweet, so can we now run 64-bit in the Z?
-
-
Has anyone tried the Smartfi from the FW site? What about the Novatel (Sprint) WWAN on 64bit?
Thanks. -
-
ftp://vug.vaio.sony.co.jp/pub/oth/64/EP0000154872.zip -
Wow, thanks for the link GenuineSorny.
Btw, I would like to install 64bit Vista Ultimate. Did those file with date 10/1/2008 are all the drivers and applications for Vaio Z? -
No problem.
There's a page that goes with that FTP site that describes all the files. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated with the newest ones as of now, but for future reference, you can get to it from here:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=227
I was anxious to get that NVIDIA driver, so I just checked the FTP daily, and when I saw some new files, I downloaded and unpacked all of them to see what was what.
Anyway, to answer your question, no, they aren't all for the Z. Just a few are. And most of those are Intel drivers that are older than what you can get from the Intel site anyway, so I didn't install anything but the graphics and bluetooth drivers from that new set of files.
Hope that helps... -
Thanks a lot GS. I will try it later.
-
@GeneuineSorny
Thank you for the useful link. It solved my last problem in Vista x64. -
would anyone mind doing a 64-bit guide?
or at least summarize everything in one big post -
GenuineSorny,
can you please put a list for all drivers did you use for Windows 2008??
thank you.. -
he already did: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3956072&postcount=11
and you also have to get the nvidia driver from another post in this thread -
Not my list, but it looks pretty good.
I found and istalled most of the drivers just over a month ago, so I've lost track of where I got most of them, but they weren't hard to find. And the link above seems to have what you need anyway.
The drivers for Windows Server 2008 are the same as Vista. The only difference would be that Windows Server doesn't have a Bluetooth stack (well, it has the files, but the drivers are marked to install only on Vista). Here's a link that describes how to fix that
http://www.gilkirkpatrick.com/Blog/post/Installing-the-Microsoft-Bluetooth-Stack-on-Windows-Server-2008.aspx
And a pre-made package of the modified files
http://www.windows-now.com/media/p/46185.aspx -
thank you guy's..
I'm just working on the installation..
my model is VGN-Z540C -
by the way you can download the windows 2008 for free, you can try this version of ms windows up to 240 days.

I tried using these drivers and applications to install vista ultimate but can't get any of the applications to work as the application crashes when i try lauching it some of them and none of the FN Keys, Eject Button etc work.
-
cable internet users are able to i guess, but ADSL users are not able to download coz the IP address are dynamic...
like 4shared.com is good.. -
that's wierd..
I tried installing all the files, but i can't seem to get some correctly
1. stamina-speed mode not working
2. Fn feature not enabled (eg. eject key, brightness mode, ...)
3. HDD protection mode not present
4. the power management program (eg. disable dvd-drive, to save power)
and on top of that, i keep having a stupid pop-up program telling me that the battery i'm using is a pirated version, and to change to an original one after it auto-hibernate ... Grrr...
How did you guys managed to install correctly? -
@firestone and others.
I had the same problem. The apps would crash, no functions buttons worked, said using pirated battery (Isb software does this). :-(
I then re-formated, reinstalled, and tried lots of things but now have it working fine.
PS. I missed steps 9, 19, 20, 21, don't know what they do or are?
(Taken from http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=293880)
When at step 18 to install all the applications, don't, download this and install -
http://nextlevelcomputer.com/temp/on...0Utilities.zip
Make sure you already have Sony Firmware Extension Parser installed, as well as Sony Programmable IO Control (both located in Human Interface Device in Device Manager, these ENABLE S1, S2, FN, Eject, and Speed/Stamina Toggle)
1. Sony Shared Library
2. Sony Setting Utility
3. Sony VAIO Event Service
4. VAIO Control Center (Controls S1, S2)
5. VAIO Power Management (Controls Battery Care and Battery Optimization)
6. Sony ISB Utility (FN Keys, and Eject Button)
Restart if it tells you, this is important, be sure to restart if it tells you to do so. Also, you might feel that you don't want the vaio power management utility, but strangely enough, the isb utility requires it to be installed if you want the fn keys and eject button to work. Don't skip anything.
Every thing should now work perfectly except if you have a UK model, read on,
Found the WWAN Sony Z GlobeTrotter HSDPA Modem Driver - Vista 64bit.
http://rapidshare.com/files/1575089...TM380_v4.0.2.32_Vistax32x64_XPx32x64.rar.html
Point to this location to install all the components, about 5 or 6 they were and all will install fine.
You then need the GlobeTrotter Connection software, download and install the Sony Z XP downgrade WWAN application (WWAN Connection Manager for XP 2.3 - 2.3.0.630)
I'm using Vista Ultimate 64-Bit and everything works fine now -
solving Firmware Extension Parser Device & Sony Programmable I/O Control Device did the trick
Can I verify?
For the Vaio Power Management,
1. dvd drive doesn't have option to shutdown to sleep to save battery
2. Internal Firewire / coxenant modem doesn't have option to off
