    Hello,

Tried searching through the forum to find any info on the following query, but had no luck. Trying to solve an issue for the boss.

Laptop in question is a VGN - SZ79GN, which came shipped with Windows Vista Business. This is in Australia.
It's running an NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS graphics card.

Problem is that it won't properly support the new 1920 x 1080 resolution monitor he's got, therefore I'm assuming it needs a driver update from the 11/05/07 Nvidia Driver its currently got.

Problem is Sony Australia/Asia-Pacific doesn't list any Vista compatible drivers, only XP, and the Nvidia site says the driver for the 8400M isn't suitable for the Vaio range.

Could anyone suggest where I might be able to get the required driver from?

    Greatly appreciated,
    Damien

Did he use VGA cable to connect to his monitor? In this case, sure it won't work.

    It would of been VGA.
The monitor works, but not at a decent resolution. So I'm assuming the current drivers won't support 1920 x 1080, and therefore I just need to update drivers.

I'm thinking of rebooting the computer in Stamina mode, updating the Intel drivers, then rebooting in Speed mode, and updating the Nvidia drivers.
Any reason why this shouldn't work?
If there was an official Sony Vista driver for that graphics card combo from America I'd rather use it.

    Cheers!

The driver has nothing to do with it. The VGA is analog, so it can't go above 1680x1050 (google VGA max resolution for it...). So if you want to have 1920x1080, you'll need HDMI or DVI

Never used VGA on my SZ's - if I get the opportunity I'll test it.

Also - Stamina mode doesn't seem to support 1920 x 1200 output (my hookup to a screen is always via the VGP-PRSZ1 docking station via DVI for all my SZ's)

Regarding the post above, I could do 2048 x 1536 several years ago on CRT's through VGA, so whatever google is telling you it is (as usual, for people who don't know what they're looking for) useless info.

EDIT: I forgot that I have minions so I had one drag over a 2707WFP and hook it up to the SZ on my desk here. I can do 1920 x 1200 (not 1080) in Speed Mode through the onboard VGA port no problems. The driver date on this SZ71 is 11/5/2007.

However, we've got the same monitor running on an XP desktop, through analogue VGA at full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080. Its a much older computer than the laptop, and all it needed to run the resolution was a driver update.

Thanks for the comments guys, I actually get to have a fiddle with the computer today so I'll check back in later to continue the challenge.

The laptop doesn't have a docking station, migh have to be a purchase if its needed to run via HDMI or DVI. The laptop body only has VGA port.

    Cheers.

I finally got my hands physically on the laptop. 3 clicks and it works. It's probable that my boss had it on clone view with dual screens, therefore limiting the external LCD to the resolution of the laptop panel and therefore he just assumed it didn't work. Sheesh, I should get a pay rise.

VGA plug supports the full 1920 x 1080 LCD panel. This is all on Speed mode.

Thanks for your time guys, was greatly apreciated. Have a good weekend! :)
