    Hi Guys,

i finally found a way to get Vista Drivers running on my FE-11H with Vista Business. Sound, Brightness, FN-Key with OSD all works. I don't know if this will work with other Vaio-Models too, but i thought i tell you how i did it.

On the US-Sony Site there are drivers for the fe800 series, which has Vista as operating system. I used the drivers for the fe890E.

So first download the Sony Utilities Driver Package, the Graphic Driver Package(Nvidia or Intel, the Nvidia driver seems to be the same to the one distributed through windows update, so maybe you can skip this one) and the Sony Shared dll package. Of course, you can download all of the other drivers too, but these are the most important ones.

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFE890E&UpdateType=Everything

Unfortunately these drivers have a model-check built inside, but with a little "magic" this isn't a problem.

So when you 've downloaded the driver packages run one these. It will tell you that you can't install the driver on these model (if it doesn't then you suppossed to have an FE890E and you can stop reading this :D ).

So now go to your Vista-directoy(c:\windows; d:\windows or similar). There you will find a file Model.txt. When you open it, you 'll see it contains your Modelname.

So now we gonna change this model name to "VGN-FE890E". So now close the file and save the changes. We 'll now have to make sure that windows will not change the file.

(As i own the german-version of vista, i 'm not sure if the menu-names are correct, but i think they shouldn't be much different).

So right-click the file und select "Properties". Then select the Security-Tab. You now have to disable write-Access to the file for all Groups (System, Administrators, Users).

When 've finished, try to run one of the setup-files. You should get on Error-Message but the Model-Check will pass and the drivers are installed on your system.(Might take some time).

I installed first the Sony Utilities, then the Nvidia Graphics driver and at last the Sony Shared DLL. Then everything worked fine.

I don't have to tell you that there is no guarantee it will work, also you might break your vista-installation. So only do it, if you know what you are doing.

All the others should wait until Sony released Vista-Drivers for your Model.

Update: For those of you who haven't turned UAC off, you'll have to give yourself Full Permission to edit the Model.txt-File. Thanks for the tip lbohn

Also i found out that these installer packages are extracted to your temp-directory(it is located on your vista-drive\User\Username\AppData\Local\Temp). On my PC the directories started with letters GLF , so you can save them. So for the next time you can only install the driver you need, without the modelcheck.

I started uploading the single application packages to uploading.com. Just download an install:

    Sony Event Service Driver
    http://www.uploading.com/files/UEC4CS0Z/Vaio_Event_Service.rar.html

    Sony Utilities DLL Package:
    http://www.uploading.com/files/FXSDSK15/SonyUtils.rar.html

    Sony Shared DLL Libary Package
    http://www.uploading.com/files/XCY09BN9/Sony_Shared_Libary.rar.html

    Sony Utiltiy Series Package
    http://www.uploading.com/files/Y5RA5Q0V/Setting_Utility_Series.rar.html

i think these are the important ones to get FN-Keys and Brightness Control to work.

    Greets Tobi

    Great work Tobi!

This workaround also works on my FS790 running Vista RC2. I just received my Business RTM license yesterday, so I haven't installed it yet. :p

I didn't install the nVidia drivers (already had the 9746 drivers from Windows Update). I installed the Notebook Utilities & Shared DLL using Tobi's instructions above. Fn + F5/F6 finally adjusted brightness. :) Didn't reboot. I then uninstalled the stuff not relevant to my laptop (camera utility, LAN utility, wireless switch & VAIO Central). Fn + F5/F6 still adjusts brightness. :) Rebooted. Fn + F5/F6 still adjusts brightness! :) Audio & muting also work. Haven't checked LCD/VGA toggle, but I'm sure it works as well.

One note, I did have to give myself Full Control permission before I could edit Model.txt. I haven't turned off UAC like many folks do. From Tobi's instructions, it appears he is either running as an administrator or has UAC off.

This is sweet, I downloaded for my SZ370 and it works too (brightness, volume, etc.).
I also downloaded Sony Notebook Utilities and gave me Camera Capture Utilities and Vaio Central which enable to use/modify the S buttons.
Except, Power Management still not working right...
    Thanks for the heads up!

SZ drivers not yet available? Esp. I need the drivers for camera, Fingerprint reader, memorystick. Most of FE drives and utils work, though, but not for those devices

I am glad to read that. I guess sony customized the control center. The brightness is controlled by the driver

But we paid too much money to buy Sony and to use Sony support, not Toshiba which is better

Yes, I'm sorry I jumped the gun! The driver and the 5.6 version of the application installs but it says it can't connect to my fingerprint reader. :(

Thanks, I have the OSD and function keys working well on my Vaio FS-295XP, the only remaining issue I have, is that I wish to have the display dim when running on batteries, anyone know how to achieve this?

There are advanced power settings, you start with screen saver, then power profiles, and then look for advanced settings. It is pretty comprehensive.

It's very nice you trying to blag your forum responses, but there is no such option in the advanced power management list.

So again, does anyone know how to get the display brightness to drop when running on batteries, like it used to under XP?

The automatic brightness change was controlled by VAIO power management in xp. I guess we'll have to wait for Sony to release it. I wonder if the newer Sony laptops with Vista already has this application.

I had the same problem but was finally able to get scrolling working on my FS760/W with the Fujitsu ALPS driver @ http://www.fujitsupc.com/downloads/mobile/POINTING_ALPS_V7.0.401.2_VISTA.EXE . Hope this helps.

BTW, thanks nerd78 and the rest of you guys. My Fn keys finally work perfectly on my VGN-FS760/W thanks to this workaround.

I tried all quite a few of these tricks on my TX650p. None of them worked. Has anyone had any luck? I changed the model.txt to be the 750p, which is in the list, everything installed fine, but none of my functions work... Does anyone have any advise?

Well, I thought I'd put in my 2 cents since I've been struggling with these same issues with my SZ390p.

I installed Vista Enterprise and had the same problems with the FN (function keys) not working. I called Sony and was told my model does not support Vista Enterprise, only Vista Business, and that was why some of the drivers didn't work. Alas, I reformatted, and installed Vista Business only to find I had the same problem.

I've Googled this issue a ton of times, finding forums like this saying that if I install a specific set of drivers in an order pre-determined by the positioning of the planets in the solar system, and reboot while hopping on one foot, everything will work. None of this has worked for me.

I called Sony again on Friday (4/28). I finally got through their thick skulls that I wanted to know what I could do to get my function keys to work. They finally acknowledged there was no driver that worked with Vista yet. The man assured me that the issue was being turned over to Sony's programmers, who would have it fixed in a day or two. Given the fact that I called on a Friday night, I'm willing to give them til 5/2 or 5/3. He actually told me to call back if the drivers were not up within that time frame.

While the FN keys are my main annoyance, I've still found the following glitches:

    * Hibernate doesn't work -- I get the "Windows did not shut down properly" message if I hit a key to get out of hibernate mode
    * Battery won't charge unless the computer is powered on and not in hibernate/sleep mode
    * Camera doesn't work (I haven't played around with it a whole lot -- so it could just be me not knowing my way around Vista quite yet)

Everything else works great. Anyway, so here's to hoping Sony fulfills their promise that that FN key driver will be up this week :)

    Hey
i have the vgn-c140g and it comes without bluetooth,
as for the another model with the same specifications for example the vgn-c190g it has bluetooth.

my question is: can u make bluetooth work on my laptop by using the vgn-c190g drivers. since the bluetooth is in the wireless adaptor and no extra hardware is installed in the other laptop model!

    plz reply

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.
I have a SZ220 and I migrated to Vista Business and had the usual problems: Fc buttons, S buttons, Speed/Stamina switch. With your suggestions all of these work perfectly. My only problem now is the camera. I can't get it to work. I've done everything and it still "doesn't exist".
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with my SZ 390P. I had tried EVERY METHOD mentioned in multiple threads. Someone in another thread suggested buying Sony's Vista Companion DVD. It auto-installs the software and drivers associated with Vista (tho not the OS itself), and apparently eliminates a lot of the problems we've come across with manually downloading and installing. Mine ended up being around $13 shipped. I should get it this week; I'll post results. Hopefully it'll work out!
