I wonder if someone could compare this with the one we downloaded few weeks ago and was supposed to be final. Just to make sure there is no change!

Just installed official SP1 x64 via Windows Update on my AR.
WU said ~121 MB. I noticed it worked with lots of bits and pieces instead of downloading a single big file. Therefore I could not grab the file for offline usage.
Installation took about 30 minutes, everything fine, though I don't use any Sony drivers & utils at all.
Copying a ~1 GB file from one internal HDD to the other one is roughly 1.5x faster :)
My optical drive is now labeled "BD-RE Drive" instead of DVD something.

No bad things discovered yet but I had do a little work after install because:
*) it enabled some devices (I don't use IDE Channel #2, modem etc. so I had these things disabled in Device Manager).
*) it enabled a couple of startups (Realtek driver)

This article has a list of the specific drivers. If you have one of these get it updated. You should NOT try the full installer. It does not do a driver check and MAY give you headaches after the install.

I installed SP1 from windows update in my FZ-190E. I had an updated sigmatel driver before downloading SP1. Updated drive can be found here : ftp://download.sony.com/US/pc/STDAUD-01487701-US.EXE

The exe is for FZ-190E. I think this should work for any sigmatel audio device in vista.

So i check for update from WU on my SZ780N5 which installed by P1 Clean Install DVD (not the BLOATWARE version) ... nothing for SP1 ..
So i download directly from the link provided ... 434MB it is .. but can't wait to see what it is ... Download complete .. time for installation ... i wait and wait for 1 to 1 and half hour ... and finally completed ...
    So i check :
    - Sound check ... OK
    - VGA Intel Express 965 check ... OK
    - VGA switch to Speed NVIDIA 8400M GS ... OK (encountered issue with wireless .. restart issue resolved)
    - Device Manager check ... no errors ... OK
    - Fingerprint ... i still can swipe my fingers ... OK
    - Motion Eye ... immediatelly open and can see myself ... OK
    - Wireless Net ... OK
    - Battery Care ... still functioning at 80% ... OK
    - Touchpad .. click and scroll .. work as a charm ... OK
    - Processor previously known as 2.4GHz .. now it is 2.5Ghz on device manager ... OK
    - Bluetooth ... OK

    Apps Check ... OK
    - IE been changed ..
    - Windows Mail been changed ..
    - Kaspersky AV (not default package) ..
    - VAIO Camera capture utility ...
    - Sony Baterry Care Function ...
    - VAIO Control Center ..

    What else ???
So far so good for me .. performance as fast as from P1 DVD Clean install .. nothing to complain about ...
will post if anything come up after the SP1 upgrade ...

    OVERALL EXPERIENCE : HAPPY ... :D

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330)

    Installation date: ‎3/‎18/‎2008 10:00 PM

    Installation status: Successful

    Update type: Important

So far I don't notice any difference, but I will run some test later on. Drivers are all working.

That's because Gary is wrong in above post, Microsoft has said that it would not be widely available until mid-April. I just checked Windows Update myself and it's also showing that Vista is "up-to-date." It may be a matter of semantics, but as I stated above, you can manually download the update, if you like.

No, it has NOTHING to do with semantics. Have you not bothered to read any of the threads here about folks who have already downloaded it from Windows Update starting on Tuesday?? Microsoft said it would not be available for AUTOMATIC updates until April. There is big difference in it being widely available and it being available via Automatic updates. And the difference is not semantic. It is widely available to anyone today who wants to use Windows Update and has the prerequisites installed and up to date drivers.

Here is a link to Ed Bott's article on ZDnet about how to get it through Windows update so that you don't have to load the huge standalone installer and can instead get an instance tailored to your specific needs. He also tells why it might not show up in Windows Update. Which has ALSO been talked about in these threads, had you bothered to read them before you told folks that it was not available via Windows Update. Here is a direct quote from Ed's article:

My vista ultimate clean installed FZ21S..currently has all sound working fine with SP1..
i got a notification from vaio update to do the update..downloaded..tried to install and i get this error

" ExitError:Error=Device object not present, restart system and run the setup again"

Did this and same bloody thing..
reinstalled the driver from the recovery partition...still didnt do the job...

now i downloaded gary's upload of the file, and i got the same damn error, then i press OK..seconds later i get a dialog saying its successfully......
god knows if its installed correctly..

AKAJohnDoe, based on what? All the online magazines are reporting it as being available if you have updated Windows with the prerequisites and do not have one of the problematic drivers installed.

I believe the online magazines are wrong. Based on the criteria here.

Of those criteria I only have Chdart.sys, but at the 4.33.1.60 level and the criteria specifies a problem with version 4.32.0.0 or earlier.

Still, I get no Vista SP1.

UPDATE: I do have one pending optional update in Windows Update. However, if SilverLight (KB946609) must be installed in order to install SP1, SP1 will NEVER be installed.

Well it is FUBAR then. ...big ol' grin...

Silverlight is not that big might be worth a shot to install it and see if you get SP1. You can always uninstall Silverlight latter. (Although I kinda like some of the silverlight enabled sites I have visited. It's just another form of Flash.)

I refused to install Silverlight too and was never able to see SP1 in Win Update. (Did a manual install.) I find it very hard MS would make you install a completely unnecessary update in order to see SP1 but you never know...

I downloaded the stand-alone install of SP1. I might let SP1 cook out there for a few days and try an install from the stand-alone sometime after my weekly full backup this Sunday ... unless SP1 stays raw or overcooks, that is... ;)

I was able to see and download SP1 via WU after I did the touchpad and audio drivers. I ran into some serious issues with the install though.

All went well through the install and the first two stages during shutdown, but when the system went to reboot for Stage 3 it would not boot the OS. The error message is "missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe (0xc0000098)", and the only "fix" is to to boot your Vista DVD and do a repair install to get you back to where you were. You do have a Vista DVD don't you? (Thanks Sony :( )

Tried this three times with the same result, and Googled this error with no help (seems to be a common error). (Thanks, MS  )

I did see one poster that had to remove his firewall and AV to do the install, so I uninstalled Zone Alarm Free and Spybot S&D) and tried again, and this time I was successful.

So, if you're going to install SP1:
    - make sure you have a system backup or a Vista install DVD
    - you may want to uninstall your Firewall / AV during the SP1 install.

It is pretty much a given that anytime you apply a major update like a service pack that you not only should, you MUST disable or uninstall any third party software that has embedded itself into the operating system at such a low level like antivirus, anti spyware and firewalls.

Glad this worked out for you!
