I just attempted to get rid of all the bloatware from my new FZ11S by doing a fresh install of Vista. But for some reason when I right click "computer" and look at the system info, it tells me the system is a Dell!

Anyone know how to fix this?

Did your Sony actually turn into a Dell? If not, does it really need to be fixed?

It's probably the result of Sony using the same supplier as Dell.

What did you use as the source for the fresh install? I am betting it was a VISTA dvd from a Dell.

Hm, no it was just Vista Ultimate out of the box.

Exactly WHERE are you looking. Be real specific as to where you are clicking.

Better yet include a screen shot.

I right click "computer" in the start menu then select "properties". The window titled "view basic information about your computer pops up".

I've just noticed the computer is no longer detecting the nvidia 8400M GT graphics card anymore either. It thinks there is a Standard VGA graphics adaptor with 14mb.

Another little annoyance is the fan - it won't stop whirring up and down even though there is nothing running except this IE7 window!

it has to be a vista dvd from dell.

there are ways to change that image but the only way i know out of the top of my head is by using a program called winvista manager (not free). they'll ask for a bitmap image with certain dimensions. but i'm pretty sure you can google the windows method

And then where does it say ANYTHING about the brand of computer???

See attachment. My install from an out of the box copy of Vista Ultimate has NO indication of the brand of computer. (The references to SonyFZ190 ar my network computer name.)

Please post a screen capture so we can see what you are talking about.

    Here.
Run "dxdiag" and see what it says for System Manufacturer. If it says Sony then Vista saying Dell is a software issue. Otherwise the mbd wasn't DMI'ed properly at the factory- perhaps the mbd in your unit is the same thing they use in a certain model Dell.

Yes, and so do I. You are talking about using a Dell Vista install DVD to install Vista on Sony laptop. If that was not the case, your image (which for some reason you don't want to post) would look like the one I posted.

well that just prove my conspiracy theory - sony is actually in cohort with dell - buying cheapo components from dell and label it sony for big profit ...

This has nothing to do with the BIOS, DMI strings, drivers, or anything else. The OP simply installed a Dell OEM (or bootlegged) Vista DVD, definitely not "out of a [retail] box." No other Vista DVD would have that logo information.

Anyway, if you want to change it, read this. Also look in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Start Menu: OEMLogoUri string value

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winsat\WindowsExperienceIndexOemInfo: Logo string value

    lol your right.

you can find vista on torrents sites, and in the comments for such torrents, you have poeple saying how do i rid of the dell logo.

the method to hack dell oem vista may work now but come sp1 it will be useless.

No, Microsoft hasn't "fixed" that OEM bug with SP1 either.
