Trying to figure out if its a hardware issue or software. Has any one encounter similar problem? This seems to affect all devices connected to USB ports (including onboard fingerprint sensor & web camera)

This occurs when the computer has just been booted. Sometimes a usb device will fail to initialize (does not show up in the device manager). But if they are initialized they will work throughout the duration of the session (until next reboot).

    Fingerprint sensor:
At the logon screen it would say "please connect fingerprint device"

    Camera:
opening the camera capture utility would say "cannot initialize device, check if other programs are using"

    external USB mouse:
would not respond to movement at the logon screen

I have tried restoring system to factory condition and this still occurs. Sony's driver updates do not seem to cure this problem.

This happens the odd time when I reboot from Stamina to Speed mode, or vice versa, but only the fingerprint reader seems to be affected. Another reboot fixes it, so I'm not too bothered. SZ3VP running Vista, by the way.

Yep, been there too. Have had all these issues and many more. And i didn`t even upgrade to Vista. I bought a brand new laptop with Vista Home Premium on it. I don`t need all this frustration, so i went back to my old sony sz with XP pro installed .... and life is good again.
I`m not saying Vista is crap. I`m just gonna wait until the first SP for Vista is out. Right now it`s just a pain in the ass...

USB initialization after sleep is a known vista bug. There are hotfixes for it. Look around.
