    Hello,

I am new to this forum, so well, hello everyone.

I have a VPC-SB290S with the little Stamina/Speed switch thing.

I have just swapped my old hard drive (500gb) for a new SSD.
I went on Sony's website and downloaded all pertinent drivers (well I think), installed all of that and everything seems to work fine, except for a few things, which I hope someone on this forum may be able to help me with.

First, and most important, the Stamina/Speed switch doesn't work at all. From what I see, I would say that it's stuck in Stamina. No matter if I boot up with one or the other, it stays right where it is. Does anyone know what driver/software manages that switch? And how can I get it back working?

Second, the "Fn" key doesn't work. I looked up on the internet and found a few "solutions", but none worked. Any clues?

Finally, has anyone with the same laptop tried to register theirs? I've had this one for a few weeks, and whenever I try to register it on Sony's website, it tells me that the model number doesn't exist (VPCSB290S).

    Thank you in advance.

The model number should be like "VPCSB-290S" see if that works.

As for the speed stamina switch, you have to install the Video drivers (Intel/AMD HD6470/HD6630 drivers - something to this effect in naming) from Sony, with the Speed switch (it could be fine either way, but this is how I do it), to make this work.

You get different model numbers in different regions. On the sony website, change your country to the country where the laptop was originally purchased and you'll find the model number there.

    Hello,
    Thanks for the answers.
I purchased my laptop in Canada, and when I try to register, I am in the Canada site from Sony. I have tried alternate versions VPC-SB290S, VPCSB-290S, etc. with no success. However, when going in the download section, when I enter the model number (VPCSB290S), it works fine.

As for the switch, both drivers (intel 3000 graphics and AMD 6xxx CCC) are installed and running. I just don't know how to "switch the screen from one GPU to the other", if you know what I mean. The switch normally does it, but now it doesn't work. I was wondering if there is a workaround to switch it from the software???

    Thanks

Man, same old issues for the 100th time for people who swap out hdd and dont know what they're doing :)

if you read the forum, there are plenty of threads about this. which drivers are critical, the order of install, etc.

    Hello,

I have looked up on forums for exactly that, with a VPC SB, and found nothing. If there are plenty of them out there, could you please help me by giving a link, or something?

Also, "knowing what you're doing", and knowing all drivers of a specific model of laptop are two completely and absolutely different things. Please remember that before insulting people.

    Thank you.

You just beat all of Sony's technical assistance in 1 minute!

Works like a charm now. For those who might have similar issue, there probably was an installation error with the notebook utilities thing. I had installed it, but I guess it wasn't working then. Now it's all fine!

Love the laptop. Thanks for the help again, jeremyshaw.

    Good day.

Haha...dont get offended so easily dude. Remeber for the future...if you are not sure about something (esp. critical), then dont do it unless you read up about it. You'd be in much deeper sh*t if you had, say, tried to update something else and windows boot got screwed up... or bios update failed.

I absolutely don't feel offended. However, I have great experience with everything related to computers, both software and hardware.

I just want to point out the difference here between "not knowing what you're doing", and simply not knowing which specific software/driver does which specific task, for a very specific company, and a very specific laptop.
It's like telling an experienced mechanic that he doesn't know what he's doing because he asks you what is the size of the bolts holding the exhaust collector on a 2010 Cadillac CTS.

Nothing personal though, I'm just saying...

    Good day.
