Recently purchased a VGN-SZ61MN/B laptop and having issues trying to hide the 'WAN tray' which also shows the Bluetooth & Wireless symbols.

It's currently sitting on my desktop and I have tried what seems everything to hide / disable it to no avail.

    Help please!! :)

Yeah, I didn't like that showing either. Two ideas, click on network connections, right click and disable, and right click on your taskbar, properties, customize, always hide.

thanks for getting back to me but neither option works.

there is no mention of the wan tray on the network connections, or on the properties of the taskbar.

Rename c:\Program Files\Sony\Wireless Switch Setting Utility\Switcher.exe to be something else. I called it Switcher1.exe. Then create a shortcut on your desktop for it so you can access it when necessary.

That implies that it is an application that is starting up at boot time, right? If so is it not possible to disable it via msconfig or windows defender?

Yes it is, and no you can't. It isn't listed separately anywhere, so I think it's called by the Sony Event Service when it starts up. Renaming the executable takes care of the startup problem and doesn't seem to cause any errors. I've had it like this way for a couple months.

    LolRick,

Hmmm. I am on an FZ190 as well and don't see this "WAN Tray". I did a clean install and don't ever remember seeing it. I have the Sony event service running and it doesn't bring it up. Can you post a screen shot of exactly what we are talking about here???

    Thanks,

    Gary

    It's the leftmost tray icon.

OH! The OP said: "It's currently sitting on my desktop" so I looked on the DESKTOP not the "notification area" aka "system tray". (Vista has apparently renamed the system tray...)

Yes I have it too, but I am not sure why I would want to hide it. It's the only way to turn bluetooth on and off, right?

are you using the switch for anything?
I don't know if the config window looks the same in Vista as in XP, but you should be able to set it to start with the windows and to start minimized. If you're not using WWAN, Lan and Bluetooth uncheck start with the windows.
I am not using WWAN, so I just uninstalled switching utility. When I need BT I start it from a shortcut I made from BT stack from control panel. The physical switch turns on only LAN. They are other options, all depends what you need.

What I posted is correct for the FZ, but may not be for the SZ. I forgot that you guys have the cellular thing built in.

Gary - I made the change simply because I have an aversion to tray icons. ;) I leave lan and bluetooth on all the time, so on the extremely rare occasion that I need to switch something independently, I use my desktop shortcut to start the app.
