Trying to decide between the two. I read several people were happy with WD500gb in their Z. I think it is slower than 7.2k rpm Seagate but I wonder if anybody has experienced increased vibrations/heat using this Seagate drive. Thanks!

It is slower than all the 320gb 7.2h but it's faster than the 200gb 7.2k and other 320 5.4k rpm.

Do we know if WD500 will run cooler/with less vibrations comparing to seagate mentioned above?

I recently just got my seagate 320 7200k and put it in my sony SR laptop.

The heat/vibration is not an issue...there are none. However, I keep getting this annoying clicking periodically and it's very annoying. Also, this drive isn't really all that quiet either. There is a constant hissing that is annoying.

The performance is great, though, and is a solid drive other than the noise/clicking. Needless to say, I am not satisfied and am going to return it and get the Hitachi 7k320.

    Like you, I ever was in a dilemma to make a decision between wd500G 5400rpm and seagate 320G 7200rpm. finally, I chose wd500G 5400rpm.

so far, I really satisfy with it. very very quiet, low heat, plenty of space, higher speed than preinstall one (vista experience score is risen from 5.3 to 5.8), very very small vibration only during heavy file transfer or install big software, that is normal for all hdd except solid hdd.

Sorry guys. As far as spinal drives go, Mitsubishi is the way to go. They are past several versions of their top drives and we've never seen an unusual issue.

But! If you really want performance, go with SSD. SSD is the best for speed. OCZ and of course Intel are the top of our list! You won't believe the difference!!

I have the 3 platter Samsung 500 gb on my Z.

Fan is always on. Everyone said the Z fan is always on.

I hear clicking noise on my hd. Does WD and Seagate hd make clicking noise?

for the fans, you just put Vaio control center in silent mode, Vista in energy saving can help a lot.
you can also further to reduce the heat by undervolting the CPU using RMClock
