WQXGA is 100% working on the Z1 @ 30Hz and 35Hz, I updated the title but it didn't seem to take.
Read on to learn how to do this for the U3011 and other high resolution monitors.
If you have a U3011 you can just download one of my INF files U3011 WQXGA@35Hz or U3011 WQXGA@30Hz
So I got the idea from this other thread about the Z2 supporting a WQHD resolution hack that the Z1 would probably do that also. Guess what... It does, well sort of.
I booted my Z1 into speed mode, running my hacked 280.26 drivers
I have a HDMI>DVI cable plugged in from the Z1 to the U3011.
I went to the nVidia control panel and created a custom resolution 2560x1600@35Hz (like psyq321 discribed in the Z2/WQHD thread)
I hit the test button and BAM, I see full WQXGA resolution... click for screen shot... but as you can see it actually displays it on the screen but tells me it doesn't support it, so as soon as I click OK it drops right back to 1080P.
This is very exciting, no ViDock... but full WQXGA (with a lower refresh rate, but very usable)
So I started searching around for a solution and I landed at this article
I followed the instructions exactly and I was able to create this 35Hz INF override for the U3011 and this 30Hz INF override for the U3011
Note the instructions to get this working assume that you are using good nVidia drivers, not the crap Sony drivers. In my case I am using the BIOS hack and the latest patched drivers, but there is another way. Props to lovelaptops
So either use Andrew's drivers... or have a look at Latest VPC-Z1/330M Drivers for the BIOS Hack People
After you install some hacked up drivers follow these steps
So here is the trick to figuring out the timing quick and easy.
Open the nVidia control panel
click "change resolution"
click "create custom resolution"
Set the horizontal and vertical pixels
set the Refresh rate
then expand the "Timing" area
NOTE: the pixel clock - this is what you need to put into Pheonix later
![]()
(note this pixel clock is for 35Hz)
OK, now you need to download Phoenix.exe
run it
click the tools menu
then click "extract registry EDID..."
click the monitor you want, the DEL4063 in my case
Then click detailed timings
then click the pencil on the toolbar
then enter the exact pixel clock we generated from the nVidia display before
![]()
(note this pixel clock is for 30Hz)
Now click File
click "Save EDID as"
save it
now get monifo
install moninfo, then run it
click file
click open
find your dat file
click file
click create inf
save it
go the the device manager
find the monitor
update the driver to your new INF
reboot
when you get back to windows you should be running your new high resolution automatically.
EDIT: I had some people tell me that they couldn't get the monitor driver to install, so I took some screen snips of the steps

Maybe PowerStrip would be useful?
EnTech Taiwan | Utilities | PowerStrip -
This should work for any WQXGA or WQHD display, or any other display greater that WUXGA (1920x1200)
So for anyone who has been wanting to run a super high resolution now you can do it, WITHOUT THE ViDock!!!!
EDIT: I changed the title of this thread, but it doesn't seem to be updated in the forum listing, what is up with that? -
Er.. the two pixel clocks (yellow highlighted) are different. Could you clarify? Is some calculation involved? Or was that screenshot taken before you put in the new pixel clock values?
-
you are right, the first one is for 35Hz the second one is for 30Hz
I am working on 48Hz as it will be a perfect double of 24P, so it should eliminate judder when watching Blu-ray.
The INF that I uploaded is actually a 30Hz driver... for now, I'll upload a 48Hz file if I can get that going. FWIW 50Hz seems to work also. 60Hz is just too high for the single TDMS link I guess, I works but it flashes on and off. -
I just tried DVI from the Z1 Dock to the U3011 and it also works perfectly at 2560x1600@35Hz
I know 35Hz is not ideal... but it is a lot less work and money than a ViDock, also the ViDock has its own issues. -
Hey, do you think installing this driver allow for 1 x U3011 to run via HDMI @35Hz, and simultaneously allow for 2 x U3011 to run via ViDock @ 60Hz?
-
Why don't you try moving them around, put one of the 30" monitors on HDMI then put the 24" on the ViDock. Apply the hack to the 30" on HDMI and give it a whirl. Make sure you use an HDMI to DVI cable. -
Argh. Has anyone tried this trick for the VPCS-A/B/C?
-
I think it would work, there isn't really anything hardware specific going on here except creating an INF with the correct EDID. In theory my driver would make the U3011 run on nVidia, Intel or ATI graphics. In theory you could drive two U3011 monitors with the new Z2.
Do you have a S laptop and a high resolution (e.g. greater than 1920x1200) screen? If you have both then give it a try. If you have the S laptop then find someone with an awesome screen and give it a try.
Remember that the you must use DVI on the monitor side, on the laptop side I've tried HDMI and DVI via the dock. For most scenarios an HDMI>DVI cable is what you need. -
grrrr can't get the new driver (either yours or one I created using your steps to install). Always get "The best driver software for your device is already installed" Tried uninstalling all monitor drivers, rebooting then installing.

I do have the LP3065.
I tried editing the INF file with the suggested pixel clock from the intel settings, and I haven't gotten anything showing up other than random vertical bars sometimes.
I tried: 2560x1600 30Hz
eek. -
Are you using DVI on the monitor side?
maybe you could email me your .DAT file from Phoenix? jeff [at] computercowboy.com
I will send you back an INF -
Yeah, I'm using hdmi-dvi cord. I sent you an email with the .dat file I am using. Thanks!
-

let us know if it works and I'll add it to the first post! -
Nice work, CC!
I tried out your 35Hz driver on my Dell U3011 and it's super usable and useful. -
Keep an eye on this tread.
P.S. send me some rep+ -
-
No problem, I have fiddled with trying to create a drivers that will allow more than one refresh rate @ WQXGA. No luck so far.
-
Actually, if I boot up with the HDMI cable plugged in I get a BSOD when typing my log in details at the welcome screen. If I boot up unplugged, then plug in the HDMI cable it works. It's a bit like the ViDock issue LOL.
-
something is very wrong or weird with your setup, I think you should clean your drivers and start them fresh, or just do a full clean install. You should not be getting a BSOD just because an HDMI cable is plugged in to your laptop.
-
Strangely, after doing no more than a few reboots, the BSOD issue has gone away
-
Well that is good

The only thing I've changed since yesterday is my underwear. Could that be it do ya think?

It is already proven that the Z2 can drive WQHD (2560x1440), we are pretty sure that it will drive WQXGA also. Have a look at the following thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/602724-success-2560x1440-support-new-vpc-z2-dell-u2711.html
Keep in mind you may not have to do all that DTD stuff, you can probably just install my EDID driver. I'll let you know when I get one. Either way the bandwidth is there, we know the Z2 can drive it directly using the Intel Graphics. The really interesting question is can it drive two, one from the lappy and one from the PMD. In theory it should be able to with drivers only. -
Hi ComputerCowboy, I purchased a Dell U3011 and would like to connect it to my laptop with HDMI cable.
I followed all the steps in the first post but it keeps giving me "test failed".
This type of hack you can do it with the HDMI-> HDMI or is required cable HDMI-> DVI ???
NB. Sorry for my bad english. -
only works with HDMI>DVI

Hey there,
I tried your guide for setting up my LG Flatron W3000H, "powered" by a Mobility Radeon HD5650 out of an Acer Aspire 8943G.
( Technical data for LG W3000H-BN - LCD Monitor at dooyoo.co.uk)
First Problem: I can't set up custom resolutions like you did, since ATI does not support custom resolutions. Did it anyway through regedit.exe.. (but i guess this is secondary since you only seem to need it for the pixel clock)..
I opened phoenix and moninfo, installed the driver as you described it and rebooted. I am now (finally) able to change the resolution to 2560x1600, yet the screen turns black and stays that way.. I dont want to use the screen with 1280x800 (only second supported resolution).. any ideas? Im not sure if he likes the 30 Hz..
P.S.: going from the HDMI output (1.3a) with an adapter (not sure if single or dual-link - is this important?) to the dual-link DVI-cable and then into the w3000h
P.P.S.: The Mobility Radeon 5650 is said to have 1 analog (up to 2048x1536), one Dual-Link DVI - HDCP supported (up to 2560x1600), one HDMI (up to 1920x1200) and one display port (up to 2560x1600) port.. well; guess which two of those my laptop has.. As i guess, youre trying to half the data that needs to be transmitted to the monitor (60 Hz -> 30 Hz) and thereby bypass the limited capacity of HDMI.. correct me if I'm wrong.. -
No clues?
-
Is it enough just use the" inf file generated from pheonix" to update the driver OR do I need to do any changes at NVIDIA control panel to get 2560X1600 resolution? ( using Speed mode)
Thanks in advance. -
-
Not a Z-series owner but F-series. Haven't got a U3011 but I'm considering buying one. That sorta rests on the ability to use it at the full resolution though. Wondering if this hack will work on my F12? Too bad there's not a U3011 I could try this on. Could go ahead and get it and see if this works, but it'd be pain if it doesn't.

Thanks again! -
Just an FYI: Recently I emailed Gaming Laptops - XOTIC PC - Gaming Notebooks - Custom Laptops - Custom Notebooks and asked them about 2560x1600 output from a laptop and they offered several options, some were not outrageously expensive.
I've not bought anything from them, but they have the best laptop customization setup I have seen, so my next one may well be from them. They do not carry Vaios, however. (After listening to my F11 whine for going on two years now, no love lost on my part.) -
Hi all. Just got a U3011 in the door to go with my Z2. Downloaded Computercowboys @35Hz inf file from page 1 in this thread, did a quick reboot, and everything works - all by HDMI only! (So no HDMI->DVI etc., pure HDMI from PMD to U3011, havent tested directly from the Z's intel, but should work?).
Only thing is, the 35Hz seems a bit sluggerish (in lack of a better word) :-s -
awesome i will give this a try
-
I just got my new Dell u3011 connected to my Notebook Gateway P-6831 vai VGA to VGA at 2560x1600 by reducing the frequency to 35 Hz. I just go into the NVidia Control and add custom 2560x1600 at 35 Hz. I did not need any INF files.

-
When I test Laptop HDMI to Dell u3011 HMDI at 2560x1600 using 35hz with CVT reduced black, it works with testing, but I can not get it add to custom resolution.
When I test Laptop HDMIor VGA to Dell u3011 HMDI or VGA at 2560x1600 using 35hz with Automatic timing, it works but it blurry, so need to add CVT reduced black timing, but I can not get it to work. -
My drivers don't work for you?
http://computercowboy.com/downloads/DELL_U3011_35Hz.inf -
I've been struggling to get 2560x1600 on my vaio Z13 for some time now. I've just come across this thread which looks very promising but I've got stuck on point 1 - there doesn't seem to be a way to create a custom resolution in my NVidia Control panel. There's no custom resolution button/link.
Does anyone have any idea how I get that? Do I need to upgrade to a newer version?
thanks

If it is something else just follow the steps on the first post of this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...k-works-but-i-need-some-help.html#post7879772 -
Thanks for your reply - much appreciated.
I don't have a U3011, I have a Hazro 27WD - Hazro Technologies | Clarity Defined | The Home of IPS Monitors
I am attempting to follow your steps on that thread but as per my post my nVidia control panel doesn't give me an option to create a custom resolution as your post suggests I need to. I'm confused as to why I don't have that option.
thx
Darren
