I have a Blackberry Plan w/ Cingular. I was wondering if its possible for me to to put my SIM card in my notebook to connect to WWAN? If yes, can anyone please tell me how to do this? Is Cingular Communication Manager already installed on the SZ series?

Since my Blackberry has Bluetooth, can I also use this to connect to WWAN?

    Thank you.

it may be possible to use your cell phone in conjunction with your laptop to get access to the internet, but you would have to pay for the service separately.

keep in mind that your sim card is not a cell phone, and your laptop most certainly doesnt have any way to connect to your sim card, directly.

but certainly if youre interested in hitting the wwan on your notebook, it IS possible, just not how you described.

you might need a card that fits in your laptop that can connect to cingular's wwan network (edge or something maybe), or you might in fact be able to use your cellphone and its bluetooth connection in place of that card.

    newbieSZ,

It could be possible if you got a WWAN equipped SZ model, but you'd probably need to add data service to your plan, which your current blackberry service might have but you'll have to contact Cingular to verify it I'd think.

Does your SZ come with the WWAN antenna? If yes, you can access the sim card right behind your battery. You can replace the sim card there with your own. You will need to go to the SmartWi application and change the settings so you are appropriately routed to your carrier's service (unless you already subscribe to Cingular's edge service for laptops, not cellphones which uses different routing). This site will be helpful to help you find the appropriate settings.

It is also possible to use your bluetooth for internet access. You need to pair the cellphone with the laptop and your laptop must see "internet" as an available service from the cellphone. This method is going to be slow however as your bandwidth will be limited by the bluetooth connection.

    Hope this is helpful.

3POD: Yes my SZ comes with a WWAN antenna. I have the SZ230. How do I change the settings. Sorry for the stupid question :( I was hoping to be able to use my BB account since I can connect to EDGE. I am trying to avoid to pay the extra $$$.

nixon: I do have the unlimited data plan with blackberry.

Is the Cingular Communication Manager pre-installed with the SZ-230?

I don't have my SZ in front of me right now but what you need to do is:
    1. replace the sim card.
    2. open the cingular connection manager
    3. create a new profile with these settings:
    - Access Point = WAP.CINGULAR
    - User Name = [email protected]
    - Password = CINGULAR1

These are the settings for the media works package. if this doesn't work then try to use the other cingular settings.

    Hope it helps.

sorry. I don't have my sz with me so i don't know the exact steps. All I remember is that there is an option to create a new profile. You don't want to use the exisiting profile because that will direct you to setting up a new account. When you get to "already have an account" you will pick the new profile you created.

I can answer your question more directly later tonight when I get home.

Ok, here is a step by step guide on how to do this:

    1. pop out the existing SIM card located behind the battery and replace with your own.

    2. Open the SmartWi application and click on Cingular. If it asks you to make a new subscription, click on "already have one" (not exact words but off the top of my head).

    3. At this point, it may start trying to connect. You should cancel. You will be left with the Cingular Connection Manager window.

    4. At the bottom of that window, click Profiles

    5. The Profiles window opens and you should click Add.

    6. Create a Custom Profile. Using the settings in my above post.

    7. "obtain an IP address automatically"

    8. Give the profile a name and hit enter.

    9. At this point, you should be back at the Cingular Connection Manager Window. Over by the right side, there's a orange box that says "connect using" hit that and select your new profile.

    10. This should be all you need to do to connect to Cingular using an existing cell phone sim card. If you are stuck here, try to different profile settings as mentioned in my above post.

    Hope this is helpful.

You should be getting the cingular connection manager app. Can you see your SmartWi window? If yes, you should see a black bar that says "Cingular" click on that. A grey box should open below it that says: Click here to launch the Cingular Connection Manager. Click that and you should see the app mentioned above.

If you still don't then you might need to re-install the SmartWi application from your restore disk.

Sorry, you can also launch it from your start menu.
