Warranty purchasing info? V505EX

I want to buy a V505EX from Newegg.com, but they don't offer warranty purchasing there...how do I purchase an extended warranty from Sony? can I do this if I don't buy the laptop from a dealer that sells warranties also?

I'm wary of buying 3rd party warranties, as the last one (for my first notebook) turned out to be from a company that mysteriously disappeared a year into my 3 year warranty.

I'm in the US if it matters.

The warranty is the only thing holding me back from buying this laptop, as it's really the only one that has everything I want in such a small package!

 

Okay, an update if anyone else is wondering these same questions...

If you call Sony Customer Service, they give you the Extended Warranty Sales Department number, which is 1-800-747-1170. On the VAIO PCG-V505EX, a 3-year warranted can be purchased which starts AFTER the 1-year Manufacturer's Warranty. It covers parts and labor for 3 years.

I had very polite and useful help staff, and I'm very pleased so far with my Sony experience. I hope to be even more pleased when I get my tiny cute laptop--I just ordered from Newegg!

Yay! very excited ;] This replaces a 7-pound Windrover paperweight which has completely disintegrated on me (going on 5 years old). That company ceased to exist after I bought the laptop, and I'm betting that won't happen with Sony.

 

What does Sony charge for that?

I was quoted 3 yrs for $329.95 plus tax which covers parts and labor.

This is what I found on the Sony.ca website:

"SONYCARE allows you to extend your original warranty by 1 or 2 years for a maximum of 5 years service protection on selected products from their date of purchase. Prior to the end of your SONYCARE plan, you may renew your coverage."

This is pretty sweet [ ], most extended warranties I have purchased (HP & Toshiba) have only been upto a maximum of 3 years. I have never seen a warranty for a computer go to 5 years. The only thing you have to make sure, is that you purchase the extended warranty BEFORE your existing warranty expires.

Thanks for the additional info. I had seen that, but I wasn't really sure if it was Canada-specific or not.

Venombite, also, the way I understand it is that it depends on the product. When I called, she had to look up the model number to see what warranty was offered on that model. Still, 4 years total on a laptop is a pretty darn good warranty, I think. Now, getting them to make good on claims will be another thing--but let's just hope I don't have to deal with that.

Reading over what I copied from the Sony.ca website and thinking about it for a bit, I think you can ONLY buy a 1 or 2 year extended warranty for all models. Getting upto 5 years are for the 3 year warranty models only. Therefore a 1 year model will only get a maximum of 3 years & a 3 year model will get a maximum of 5 years. So asking for the model is to verify what the maximum total warranty you can get. They'll be able to check if you bought a unit with 1 year, purchased a 2 year extended & went back near the end of the 3rd year to buy another 1-2 years, which they won't allow. Too bad that won't work [V]! You may want to verify this with Sony, just in case, you don't want to be caught without a warranty.
