I'm looking into buying a sony vaio VPCEB2X5E from the UK sonystyle but would prefer to get upgrade the memory myself as it is cheaper and also the HDD when Intel's 3rd gen SSDs come out.

Would upgrading void the standard 2 year warranty? If it does, is this the same for dell vostro laptops or other brands?

Generally if there's an upgrade "door" for the memory and HD, it shouldn't violate the warranty. Some makers used to put warranty stickers over those doors but I think that practice has ended.

It depends on the local law i think.
In Germany, for example, it doesn't void the warranty to open up something if they can't proof you damaged the device (even if they tell you touching whatever will void warranty).

So if you swap the drive and your screen stops working they can't tell you "It was opened, its your fault", since swapping a driven wont damage the screen.

I hope that's the case. I've emailed sony and hoping to hear back soon.

Good point about the stickers... they don't put them on easily accessible components any more. Do E series laptops have easily accessible hdd/ram compartments (hope they haven't done something silly and put them under the keyboard)
