If you have the glossy carbon fiber version, try waxing it.
I taped off a section of the lid to see before and after results. After that, I applied 3 coats of wax.
Pretty compelling:

BTW: I used Dupont Teflon car wax.

Nice! NBR members can I always count on you Zoinks to blaze a new Z11 trail (or thread).
-
Zoinks, you could start a business customizing people's notebooks for them. I wouldn't be surprised if it was quite profitable
. Looks hot btw...
-
Some observations after a day of usage:
- The lid's sheen is insanely deep. Looks awesome and is very slick to the touch.
- The wax seems to provide some protection from fingerprints/smudges. The ones that get left behind are easier to remove. I'm not sure what physics are at play here.
Place this one in the "must-do" category. Heavily recommended. -
Whoah, looks nice! Any negatives in doing this? I never done this before, will it come of on your hands or something?
-
Technically, it will come off on your hands, but don't worry. It's car wax, and it will slowly wear away into ultra-fine particles that you can't see without a microscope. The dust on top of the wax is going to be more noticeable than the wax abrasions.
How well it lasts will obviously depend on how you handle it, but my guess is that the wax should last for at least a few months before there's any visible wear.
A synthetic wax will last longer than a carnuba wax, but it probably won't be as shiny. And in some cases, a synthetic wax itself might attack or stain plastic. At least make sure you get a good brand of wax, and not the cheapest "quick dry" wax from the grocery store, and you should be fine. -
Agreed with what Arth1 said. The Dupont stuff I used is synthetic with Teflon (TM). I use Zymol on my vehicles, 4 coats every 6 months.
You should be mindful of small cracks where the wax can get in. White wax on a black laptop = bad. You can get the stuff out with some effort, so don't get too spooked about it.
Spraying off the powder residue with compressed air might be a good idea as well. I'm finding "dandruff" in some places. I'm on a plane, so there isn't much I can do about it currently. -
It must be the limitation of photos, but I can't tell which half is waxed and which isn't. :|

...or of your monitor. The difference is pronounced.

It appears I'm also a doofus - both sides look great imo, but I'm not sure which is which. Clearly, one side looks shinier than the other - I've only seen the glossy carbon fiber once in real life (and briefly), but I remember it being really shiny already, did the wax make it more shiny or less so?

H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Seconded. It's quite pronounced. -
ZoinksS2K Did u buff between coats
-
I'm not sure if mine is the glossy carbon fibre finish. I CTO'ed mine from sonystyle USA. would mine be waxable ?
-
More shiny. It is like the clear coat on a car.
-
Yours is probably the regular premium carbon fiber. I've never seen the glossy as a CTO option. I think you can only get it with the signature collection models that run >$4000.
-
Cheers, it looks ridiculously great.
-
Would anybody recommend waxing the non-glossy premium carbon? After 2 weeks in use, i've discoverd 3 small scratches on the lid and i'm feared some more will join -.-
