    1. Type msconfig in run, disable unwanted programs from startup tab.
    2. Try Disk check.
    3. Keep windows up to dated.

Jesus Christ... Did you even bother to READ his post? How is he supposed to follow your suggestion when the laptop wont even boot up?

OP, I've seen similar things happen and most, if not all, were due to power problems(ie bad power supplies, etc). Does the same thing happen when you're on battery?

Actually, the original poster can boot manually if she simply tries it twice as you can see here:

I suggest before going all theatric on people regarding what is written and what is not written, you yourself check what is actually written.

    Ok back to topic:

Hiya Cat, I personally think that it is being caused by too much pre-installed bloatwares on your laptop or a new software/driver which you installed/reinstalled is the cause of this problem.

Did you upgrade or downgrade or even change anything on your vaio?

LOL! You're joking right? Here, let me break it down in terms easier for you to understand:

The problem being reported is: Every so often the user is only getting indicator lights and nothing else. That means no BIOS screen, no Windows boot, NOTHING. "Bloatwares" and drivers have absolutely NO bearing if the machine isn't even POSTing. After powering off and back on a few times, he/she is able to get the machine to POST and boot into Windows. Understand??

You sure are off to a great start here on NBR.

As a matter of principal, disagreeing with somebody who has THOUSANDS of posts and 9 Rep Power points(which means TONS of people repped him)... means your probably wrong. lol

    IMHO

    Just wondering and speculating here:
    Could one boot via LAN?

(Another thing: Anything electrical will fail - the question is only sooner or later, and the difference between these can be significant. My question: Is it possible that the laptop is just worn out and unusable?)

It's definatley posssible, by my estimates the S2 is probably hovering around 4 years old. It sounds like its on its way out....

Thanks for reply, ironically my laptop doesn't detect the battery at all. I have been running on AC power for the last weeks. I figured that my battery died and it cannot be charged...

Yes can happen - or the battery is detected and doesn't carry any charge.
Happened to my Vaio after 2 weeks - warranty replacement of battery, just bad luck.
And happened on an old Asus after several years.

Thanks for response and my laptop can boot up. The problem is that every time i start up its always a black screen: However by manually restarting it a couple of time I can boot up normally. (the number of time is really random/luck)

Regarding your suggestion, I did a system restore with the manufacturers cd. Still same problem.

Yeah battery is dead without doubt. But I dont think this is the cause of my blackscreen problem?

Yea my laptop is about 4 years old. However I just want to see if it can be fixed. Dumping it would be such a waste. Everything works! The only problem is starting it up hehe.

Yes, but please explain how any of the suggestions you made would apply to a machine that periodically won't even start up. Let me give you some help, THEY DON'T. Your suggestions were ridiculous at best. None, I repeat, NONE of those suggestions will in any way shape or form help with a machine that PERIODICALLY won't boot.

I suggest you take a bit of your own advice... "you yourself check what is actually written."

The original poster said that PERIODICALLY THE MACHINE WILL NOT BOOT UP. Get it? Black screen, no power on self test, nothing, nada, zilch. Now please explain how "bloatware" could possibly cause such a phenomena. We anxiously await your expert explanation. If you don't know what you are talking about, refrain from posting replies. And clearly, in this case, you do NOT know what you are talking about.

Heh ok guys I will have to make it clear:

    1. When powered on i get blackscreen.
    2. If I manually restart it a couple of times it Works normally.

    Sorry for not being clear.

I'm gonna take a stab and say, either your screen is dying, your harddrive is dying, or your ram is dying. By the sound of it, it seems to be the screen. I would bring it to someone/somewhere that can actually tell you what needs to be replaced(or sonystyle backstage) and if it's something simple like a new harddrive or ram, then buy it on newegg and problem solved. If your screen is going bad, its very expensive to fix(like in the hundreds...minimum) and potentially not worth it.

Those are ALWAYS the first three components to go.

Alright, i dunno why should i explain, but anyway.

From my point of view what i thought was, his /her system was hanging while booting, so that what i suggested, but seems like some other problem.

At first place, if those suggestion are not helping anyone, but not HARMING also.

    Thanking you.

Sorry to bring up this old topic, but I had the same issue with my old Vaio FS laptop. I only had that for a year and a half (conveniently when my warranty expires) when it started exhibiting the issues Drunkencat66 describes.

I put up with it, and after a few months, the keyboard went (but rebooting it sometimes worked, or booting with a linux-based live CD) , and then another few months it completely packed up - no amount of reboots would salvage it.

I found out from Sony that the motherboard essentially failed, however it would cost on the order of what a netbook would cost today to replace it.

So there you have it - get it looked at for hardware issues, or start looking around for a new laptop.
