From what i've been reading and what customers have told me in the past, it tends to be some apple computers who don't output enough power via usb to power these external hard drives, but I have yet to encounter one PC user having issues with powering up these drives.
There's really no reason to buy the Elite, unless you like how the case looks and perhaps the software it comes with. As storage drives alone, almost any one on the market does the job. If you will be a heavier user, sticking towards seagate MAY be a better way to go, however i've owned no name brand, and all sorts of brands for years and they still work. I am not a heavy user of them though.

i do like the design of the WD Passports compared to Seagate's Freeagent Go but the main reason im planning to buy the elite its because its the best deal off ebay for its price for a 320GB HD

Actually it isn't that Apple isn't sending enough power to the external harddrive but more that the person has formatted the harddrive in the wrong format. Or bought a harddrive in the wrong format. thus they can't read the harddrive on their apple computer but it is powered up. As long as there is USB 2.0, almost all "portable" harddrives will power up. Trust me, I have stacks and stacks of external harddrives because I'm a graphic artist.

You can buy the 2 headed USB leads (one plug just for extra power) separately very cheaply. But I've never had a problem using my Passport Essential 320GB drive anywhere with the standard one to one lead that it comes with. I've heard of problems using longer cables, though - so if you'll be using the sockets at the back of your PC then it might be fiddly.

well I am using WD passport with my vaio without problem. The problem only comes for very old laptops .. any new machine will powerup from the USB.
