So I was all excited to get my new SR290 yesterday. I wasn't home for delivery, so I picked it up at the FedEx facility after 4:30pm. Shipping box was visibly damaged and taped back up. They wouldn't let me open it until I signed for it; I decided to sign instead of refuse delivery right there. Then I opened it and saw that the SR box itself was damaged and open. I think what happened is something tore through the outer box and into the product box. The computer itself does not have any visible damage.

Pissed off about Sony's packing job too, they just threw it in a box with a few (not enough) air-puff packing pieces. The SR box was totally rattling around in there.

Anyway, I had the FedEx people put two notes in the computer that indicate there was damage to both the external and product boxes at time of delivery. I was planning to wait another week or so to see if any new deals come up, then return this (as an unopened box) if I decide to buy a different Vaio. Too late now, FedEx opened the box for me  I haven't unpacked it, will decide what to do after Christmas.

    Merry Christmas everyone :)

That's sickening. It was smart to get notes from FedeX but if it was me I'd of been so mad I'd of called Sony from the parking lot. They owe you a new machine. Hope it works out. Bummer not to have it for the holiday.

At least FedEx is clearly "owning up" to it. I would contact Sony and ask them to fix it, offering them a copy of the notes.

FedEx wouldn't let me pick it up when I missed their first delivery attempt. I was told that I had to wait for their three attempts. They also put a sticker on the box that says delivery must be made to shipping address and signed otherwise, it will be returned back to the Sony. No holding for pickup. No Exceptions. (I see the same sticker on the photo on yours)

Alright, with Christmas over I finally got around to opening this up and taking a closer look. It appears they sent me a used or refurbished laptop or ?? - it is covered with fingerprints and has some small scuffs on the cover. The inside also has fingerprints and palm marks where you rest your palms to type. And the battery in the accessories box was not in the sealed bag (the bag was there, with seal broken). I fired it up and it did go to the initial Vista configuration screen before I shut it down.

I contacted Sony today (45 min wait!) and got an RMA. Took some convincing, and then they told me I had to pay shipping to send it back! I protested and they ended up sending me a FedEx return label via email. I'll send the SR290 back tomorrow. I called them rather than setting up the return online because I want to be sure I can get the same model (brand new this time!) shipped to me again. I am still not convinced they will follow through on this - we'll see.

On the plus side, I really like the size and feel of the SR290. The appearance of the titanium gray model is nice, better than I expected. Still not a big fan of the silver surrounding the keyboard, but it is ok.

I am not sure if this is what happened but I believe that if you order CTO sometimes a tech opens and installs certain parts at the Sony service center.

Could be I guess, but this was a preconfigured unit (not CTO). Anyway, considering the evidence of handling/use combined with the damage to the boxes (and the fact that I paid a grand for it - not chump change for me), I think I will feel a lot better getting a different unit.
