My Vaio got very hot too, I had a Targus, But it was surging and exeeding its power limits on my usb port

i use vatec's lapcool2.
i think it does a good job. around 30-40c during idle and under 55c during psp video conversions.
how can i tell if it's surging and exceeding power limits? -
I just use a ceramic dinner plate from my kitchen. Seems kinda crude using a plate but it does seem to absorb some of the heat and allows more airflow underneath.

you should test whether or not this "ceramic" bowl does a good job absorbing heat by using a program like everest to do a before and after comparison
