    1) What is your budget?
    • I'm willing to spend up to $1,300 (including the extended warranty and Microsoft Office) though I'd like to keep it at around $900-$1,000 if possible.

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?
    • 13-14 inch
    • Is the 15 inch really too big and heavy to lug around?

    3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
    • USA

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
    a. Like: Apple, Sony
    b. Dislike: Dell, HP (I don't really like or dislike it, but I've heard bad things about it), Gateway

    5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
    • Probably not.

    6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
    • Writing papers
    • Web surfing
    • Watching DVDs/videos on Hulu and Youtube
    • Some photo editing
    • Probably some light video editing.

    7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
    • Mostly taking it with me to class and the library and on a four hour bus ride home on some weekends.

    8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
    • Nope!

    9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
    • Preferably around 6 hours as advertised since battery life is usually lower than the advertisement, depending on what you're going to do.

    10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
    • I'd rather see what I'm buying before I buy it.

    11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
    • Mac OS
    • Windows 7

    Screen Specifics

    12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer?
    • Standard.

    13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
    • Eh, either I guess. It's my first laptop so I don't have a preference at the moment.

    Build Quality and Design

    14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
    • Yep! I'm going to sound like a shallow little girl, but I love pretty things!

    15) When are you buying this laptop?
    • In the next few weeks.

    16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
    • 4 years, hopefully! Longer would be nice, but may not be necessary cause I'll probably want a new one by then...

    Notebook Components

    17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?
    • SSD is unnecessary for my uses (I honestly wouldn't realize if I was working on a computer with one) and way too expensive!
    • And as for the HD, anywhere from 250GB to 500GB (though I've heard the 500GB is unnecessary).

    18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
    • Probably just a CDRW/DCD-ROM....that's a basic feature of most laptops, right?

I'd also like something that won't get too hot with basic usage. I'll be using it for college, by the way!

I agree. Vaio EA seems like a good fit for you. Plus it comes in pretty colors, which should please you. ;)

The thing about this though is the battery life won't be spectacular. If you're willing to go a bit smaller, which personally I think is best for a student, then you might check out the Y series. It's smaller than the EA and lacks the discreet graphics card, but that shouldn't be a problem for you since you won't be gaming. If that does bother you, you actually have the option to add in a light performing graphics card. Even with the card, the Y will be much better than the EA in terms of battery life. And it too comes with color options for the lid.

You also lose the CD/DVD player on the Y though. If that was something you wanted, you could buy a portable DVD drive.
