I bought a Sony VAIO FE11S in april 06. A month ago the screen turned into grey variable spots. With an external monitor all ok, so it's a screen hardware confirmed issue.
Sony does not accept a free repair because the warranty is only for one year and it has one year and two months. They consider that if only one week or two after the year had passed they would repair it as a comercial attention with the customer.
I'm absolutely indignated with Sony, they want me to pay 849 euros for the repair. It's astonishing that a brand of prestige like Sony offers this treat to its customers.
I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SONY VAIO PRODUCT.
-
I <3 Europe: we have an obligatory 2 year warranty
-
If you wanted a longer warranty, you should have purchased it.
-
well its not sony's fault that your warranty expired now is it..I do however admit that 849 euros is pricey..maybe a little discount since the warranty expired a little ago..but oh well what can you do.
-
thisisrecardo - surely you'd have expected the screen to last longer than a year? The retailer of the laptop wouldn't have a leg to stand on in the UK.
-
If you bought the laptop with a credit card, check the fine print there. Some credit cards automatically extend the warranty for an extra year.
-
Other brands, like Asus, offers automatically 2 year warranty. I only complain about this. Everybody understands that an screen which only last for a year is a hardware problem, the buyer has no guilt in this failure. Everybody understands except Sony; so from my point of view, it's a shame. And is also a shame that they want me to pay 849 euros (more than 1000 dollars) for the repair.
Sony is a gigant seller and could have a better attention to the customers. -
I can empathise. I would be just as angry as you, but I have seen this happen all too often with a lot of electrical equipment when I used to work in retail.
Your only options are to ask to speak to someone higher up the food chain to see if you can get a discount on the product or even get it for free, or to contact the government body of your country that handles consumer affairs. A lot of countries have a clause that can force business to repair things if it is "reasonable" to expect something to last longer than a year.
With my VAIO TZ I have opted to purchase both VAIO Overseas Cover and Wide coverage, which means that I am covered at most major international countries for 1 year and have 3 years part, labour and accidental damage (think frustration and throwing your notebook of a 10 story building into a fire) cover. Considering it only cost me an extra $124 AUD, it was really a no-brainer. -
-
Reading more, some users say VAIO FE series has suffered a lot of problems with its screens, but Sony does not assume this.
Thank for your advices all of you that understand my indignation. -
