I finally recieved an email from Sony telling me my Z series laptop is FINALLY in production, so it should be shipped sometime middle of next week, assuming there are no more delays. It's been 3 weeks and they JUST started building it!

So I was wondering what I should to to set up my Z when I (finally) recieve it for optimal performance, screen issues, anything that you current owners think a newbie should be aware of?

Check the owner's thread for info (I know it's a lot to sift through). This is my two cents: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6416473-post5946.html

It's already set up to run optimally. You can tweak to your heart's content. Will it improve overall performance? Probably not, other than giving you longer battery life, less power consumption, higher screen brightness, etc.

I am very interested in ordering a VPC Z.. not sure which way to go. I see some deals on the outlet for a Z1190x which save $200+/- vs buying a CTO 1290. Also some of the outlet models have 1x256GB SSD instead of 2x128GB SSD and 1x4GB vs 2x2GB in ram which would allow me easier upgrades.

Also on the canadian site they have the 1390. it comes with 1920 x 1080 FULL HD screen for no upcharge.
when will they be available in the US?

Do the new processors do anything more than a bit more clock speed? i540 vs i580?
also is there any difference between the i7 620 vs the 540? they are both only dual core.. not quad core like the i740QM ...
any help and advice would be great.
    Thx

I could of gone with i7, I could of gone with FullHD screen. BUT I decided to be logical. I do Excel, web, flash, gaming the most and to me I couldn't justify myself to spend $700-800 additional. I do wish I got the HD Screen but it was a $500 ticket.

    Go with Sony Outlet.

Great laptop so first to do when it arrives well its up to you but do remove all that software Sony installs that you don't need - who needs the Mcafee Security trial, and google for a uninstaller for this product since its a nightmare to uninstall! At this point once you have removed anything not required do a backup using either the Windows backup or the Vaio backup centre. When it comes to selling the laptop you can use the Vaio backup centre to restore to the factory state.
Another thing don't be tempted to hack the bios for the advanced menu since there's not much to alter anyway.
Be carefull using the Vaiocare registry cleaner - it can cause problems although it does create a system restore point. Invest in Auslogics BoostSpeed - great!
For setting up the hard drive - partition it. Use a decent hard drive manager - Paragon drive manager 2010 is one of the best round. I use 50 Gb for the C drive and the rest for the D drive (I have the 256 Gb version).
You have the choice here of keeping the Vaio backup partition (8 Gb) or deleting it its up to you.
For general use I set the display to 1600 x 900 which is perfect for most uses. Use the max resolution for dvd's, games etc.
Get a decent uninstaller that does x64 uninstalls as well - Revo uninstaller pro does this - great!
Could go on all time anyway enjoy!
