I just discovered that the color of the Z palm rest has been changed
on the spots where my palms are usually located..

is there anything I can do to further prevent it from wearing out?

Check out the Z Owner's thread, both the current part 2 and part 1. This issue has been discussed quite a bit.

NBR member ZoinksS2k wrapped the palm rests in a protective coating, and other members have been able to accomplish similar protections in different ways. I think the simplest way is to just lay some clear boxing tape down on the palm rests when you'll have extensive periods of typing.

Sweet. Make it look bad from the start. That's what my mom does. She wraps the sofas when they are new so that they look like crap from the get go.

I'll let them get bad on their own then if it bothers me, I'll put a big "sticker" over them. Sticky shelf paper should be good. Maybe a nice bamboo print.

Nothing you can do about it.
Mine is pretty significant and it creaks a bit. I just have to live with it.
I had to send my Z in for a repair on the LCD while it was in there I asked them to replace my palm rest under warranty but they quoted me $350. They don't cover it as I had hoped. It doesn't look too bad though at least.

You can buy a new part and place some protective material on it before installing it yourself. I think beaups found this part:

    https://www.servicesplus.sel.sony.com/sony-part-number-A1769482B.aspx

It might be wrong, so call in and make sure before you purchase.

edit: that should be the right part, just went through the VPCZ1 parts list and that was the part that was given

Have you seen Zoinks's solution? It does not look bad at all: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/478061-how-protective-film-application-z11.html

When I took my Z to the car place to put a clear shield on, they also offered vinyl applications over the parts I want covered. You could go that route and have a colored vinyl put on such as gray to match the computer or their various designs such as carbon fiber. It might be worthwhile to take a trip to your local car tinting place and just take a look at the different materials available.

To each his own I suppose. I guess all of this discussion is personal preference really. Some people might not mind the palm rest wear look at all. Regarding the OP, the wear is already there so not much can be done protection-wise now, other than prevent further wear. I guess for others looking to avoid the issue, just know that efforts to protect your palm rests are going to require some time and effort and/or some potential sacrifice in the way the machine looks.

I use clear boxing tape to protect the palm rests. Super simple application and removal. Almost unnoticeable in darker lighting. Extremely tacky looking in bright lighting. But I would rather have unworn palm rests and take the tacky look. It's a personal judgment call.

Mine creaks too, on the right hand side.

The interesting part is that it happens the first time I apply some pressure on the right side, and for the next 5~ minutes further pressure applications result in no creaks. But after some time passes, the first touch makes a sound again.

I keep hearing people talk about the palm rest creaking on the right side. Has anyone tried tightening anything there, or doing any forensic examinations, to see if it can be made to go away?

I don't currently have this problem myself (at least not yet anyway), but like the creaking right-hinge issue, it may be that it's just a matter of time for all of us.

I wonder... if we tighten the screws on the bottom of the laptop if that would fix the palmrest creaking... isnt the palmrest screwed in anyways?

Be careful not to tighten too much (it doesn't seem to help the creaking anyhow). The screws will sink through the carbon base a bit and drive up bubbles into the palmrest and you can see them. Trust me :(
