I dropped my first gen Vaio Z recently and it does not even turn on.. :( Is there anything I can do with it? I think the motherboard is broken and I'd like to get some value out of it if its possible other than using it as a nice looking paper weight. Thanks guys

Can you describe the damage or better yet a picture or two ?

Are you hoping to get it working or just get some useful parts ?

If I could get it working, that would be ideal. It's a little hard to describe so I will upload pictures tomorrow. The usb port area is quite torn apart because there was a jack in the USB port and landed on it during the fall. thanks for your help

Check if RAM is seated properly. You may need to take it apart and check condition of hard drive. Replace it if necessary, that may "fix" it for you.

If everything else fails, you might sell parts of it on eBay. Battery, screen, RAM, Wi-Fi card, WWAN card (if you have it), BD or DVD (whichever you have) should fetch a reasonable sum. Especially screen if it's in good condition.

I just opened it up and everything seems to be in good condition and in place. the laptop shows no signs of life when plugged in which leads me to think its the A/C part that's broken (hopefully). does anyone know how much or how I could fix it? thanks

Does anyone know how to test whether it is the A/C component that is broken or the hard drive? FWIIW, the laptop shows no signs of life. Thanks.

If it's the hard drive, I would think it would still start up, i.e. some lights flashing, screen lights up etc.. If absolutely no sign of life, then yes the A/C may be the issue. Does the motherboard look perfectly ok? I don't know how to test just the A/C though. For the drive, you can take it out and see if it works on a different machine.

If you disconnect the battery for a while (couple of days) and plug it back in, does the recharge light come on? I don't think that's a complete A/C test though...

Yes. Even after draining the battery, there is still no signs of the computer being on. the motherboard looked fine but I'm a computer noobie and I don't know much. Where or how could I repair the A/C? thank you.

I do not know... I think it needs professional diagnostics done on it, by Sony techs. If they say the only A/C needs replacing, they'll give a quote as well. If it's a replaceable component, you might try doing it yourself. It's really hard to say
