For example, I've seen VGN-FW455J or VGN-FW455J/B and I have seen some JEB, or JFB etc.

    Any ideas?

Hahaha. Yea this has been covered a few times but here's a good listing!

OS letters - Usually found right after the number part. i.e. VGN-FW455 J/B or VGN-FW490 DEB

    J - Vista Home Premium 64-Bit
    D - Vista Business 64-bit
    Y - Vista Ultimate 64-bit
    E - Vista Home Premium 32-bit
    N - Vista Business 32-bit
    U - Vista Ultimate 32-bit
    P - XP Pro
    G - Win7 Professional 64-bit
    F - Win7 Home Premium 64-bit
    K - Win 7 Home Premium 32-bit
    A - Win7 Starter

The last letter is always the color.

    B - Black
    R - Red
    N - Gold or Champagne
    G - Green
    T - Brown
    P - Pink
    W - White
    and a few others

If there is a middle letter, that's usually just an indication of different configurations of different models under that series number -

    FW490DAB
    FW490DBB
    FW490DCB

All have Vista Business 64-bit, all are Black, but have different configs.

    There you go.
