Hey guys, I'm heading off to college in the fall and was thinking of getting the Vaio F 3D. What do you all think of it? Is it a nice laptop or should I look to something else, and if I should, what would you recommend?

I will be doing the basic word processing, PowerPoint, surfing the web, and possibly get into some gaming.

I think it is great... but it is freakin' huge. You need a 3/4 ton truck just to bring it around. I was looking at buying one when they first came out because "I'll buy just about any cool 3D thing" but I just could not get past the size and weight.

It's a nice laptop and has very nice specs. Whether you want to lug something that size and 6.6 pounds around is really only a question you can answer.

If you're just doing the first three, then an atom processor can get you by. So it sounds like this computer will do everything you need it to... but then that raises the question, why do you buy a 3D computer to do word processing and surf the web?

gaming is not advisable on a 3d unit, specially one with such a week gpu, since it cuts the fps in half.

it is as it always was, overpriced, underpowered

Why do you need to come here and bash the F series ????
Every laptop has its own target group and the F 3D target group is people looking for the ultimate in mobile entertainment, a multimedia beast. And the F 3D is arguably the best multimedia laptop money can buy today.

No point comparing it with gaming laptops or ultra portables like the Z1/Z2

And you are also missing one point - for a SONY VAIO fanboy this year this is as good as a Sony Vaio gets performance wise. Last year the Z was the Sony flagship and also the most powerful and fastest Vaio, but this year the new Z will not have a performance edge as it will only have an i7 2620M which is about the same as the i7 640M last year.

The 2820QM in the F simply annihilates the i7 2620M.

There is simply no comparison performance wise between the F 2D/3D and the upcoming Z.

I own the F21 and consider this my favorite Vaio so far. While I miss the bigger screen of my AW, I love the styling, features, and capability of this machine. There isn't really much it can't do, save for the gaming "limits" as discussed above. Still, I don't think Sony's ever been known to put as good of a GPU in their laptops as they probably could have, so this isn't as much of a surprise to me. The games I play run fine on here so far; 3D does indeed bring your frames down, but I usually just turn it on for fun here and there anyway. I think the biggest hook Sony wanted users to experience with the 3D capabilities were movies, and this works very well.

As far as size and weight, it doesn't bother me. This is probably because I was carrying the AW around before this, which was at least a good two pounds heavier. :)
