A description or a recording would really help me out.

The first notebook I received was sent back due to the fan noise--I thought it was defective. But I got another brand new one here and the fan still sounds odd to me--I don't know whether I'm just expecting it to be too quiet...but other people in this forum say they have no problem with the fan. Mine seems to oscillate up and down constantly while it's on. It's pretty loud+annoying for a fan, with a whiny tone to it. I'm not having any heat issues so far, but it does make it very difficult to concentrate.

The fan on my FZ190 is very quiet, but it does give off a lot of heat through the vent on the left rear corner.

Of the four laptops I have owned over the past 10 years, this is by far the quietest. I never work in a totally quiet environment though. I always have a radio, CD or MP3 player going. My last two Sony's, a XG39 and before that a Z505SX, both had significantly louder fans.

I just got my FZ190 yesterday and am in the process of doing a clean install of Vista. (I am methodically searching out all drivers and software and documenting the process, which I'll post here when done.) I'll make a point of turning off the background noises today and listen to the fan carefully. But I have to tell you I think you are asking too much to expect it to be any quieter than it is. But then again I am so accustomed to the LOUD fan on the XG39. It was a BEAST.

If I put my head right next to the vent on the left side of the computer all I can hear is a faint rush of air. (And I have very good hearing - I can hear that mosquito ring tone and other horrible high-pitched things in my workplace)

HOWEVER, when the computer comes out of hibernation, it makes a strange high-pitched whine for about 30 seconds, and then the sound goes away... I assume that is the HD.

Hey - I've got the same problem as you ATP. The fan runs constantly and can be clearly heard on the other side of the room. Also there is a lot of quick small variations in the speed of the fan and a whiny sound to it. I really love this computer except for this, but since I mainly use this computer in a library I'm sending it back. I was wondering if anyone could post what configurations they had and if they have fan problems, maybe theres a pattern to the sound.

I talked to someone who's had their system for about three weeks and he said that his seemed to get less annoying as he used it more. Either it 'learns' or you just acclimate to it. It seems as though ALL the FZ190s have this fan issue. I went to one of my friend's houses to look at his 190 and his fan sounds the same, despite completely different configs.

Sorry for the double post, but I'd really like to get more feedback on this; I just went to the Circuit City today and listened to a fan on the FZ190 with integrated graphics, and it seemed to sound the same, though obviously it came on less often. Will someone who says they don't have the fan issue please tell me what their fan sounds like or provide a recording? I'm trying to decide whether or not to return this lappy.
