    Hi all,

Quick question. I have a VGN-SR19VN, it seems to make a quiet mid-tone rapid (~4 or 5) clicks/pips/poping sound (hard to explain). Sometimes it does it ever minute or so, other times its only once in 5 minutes. The sound seems to originate from the right hand side of the laptop and seems to be proceeded by a short slight mechanical whirring sound.

The sound occurs even when the computer and hard drive are idle.

Its not loud but its one of those sounds that becomes really distracting after a while.

Is this normal? Any ideas what it is? And how to stop it?

    Cheers,

    Serp

    sounds like the harddrive.

sometime, the harddrive will park its head even when the disk is spinning, this is done to reserve power (less aerodynamic drag on the disk) and to protect the disk from bump and shake.

by the sound of things, yes it is normal.

im not sure why you want to stop this. every harddrive especially laptop's one do this, this behaviour protects the drive, and is embeded on the drive's firmware, some OS sometime give a specific command so the drive would do this. if you want to stop it then, you need to constantly use the harddrive. even then, if you will only use the drive lightly, the drive would store the info on its built-in cache and the drive still park its head.

    well, anyway, good luck.

Like said, it is your hard drive.

How to stop it: search for "clicking resolved" or hdparm.

Thought it might be the hard drive - although the hard drive light doesn't flicker on when the sound is made.

    Will search for hdparm.

    Thanks all.

edit - hdparm amended - problem resolved. Peace and quiet at last. Thanks again.
