Might also want to be careful of the above listings on the J, E, & U annotations.

I may be wrong but I think those refer to the following (& note that these regions have got different keyboard layouts):

    J - Japan
    E - Europe
    U - U.S.

    Good luck. :)

Which country &/or region are you located at? That may help us to give you some ideas on where you may be able to obtain the parts that you need.

Just the aluminium part, no buttons, keyboard, palmrest, etc.

That's the flat thin silver thing that surrounds the front edge of the screen. (it has SONY written in the center and VPCZ1 written on the right at the bottom)

Has anyone here ever replaced just the aluminum cover for the keyboard/palmrest, disassembling everything attached to it in the process? It almost seems impossible, given the amount of tape/fabric and adhesive that looks to be holding everything together. The entire assembly might exist somewhere, at least used. I don't want to try taking mine apart unless someone else has done it (and put it back together) successfully.

    Thanks

I just replaced that part on my VPCZ1290X. It seemed like it would be impossible looking at it, but I just took my time. What really helped was to taking pictures every so often as I disassembled things so I could make sure I was putting it back together properly. A lot of screws are hidden under black tape. Anyways I'll be honest after I got it back together I was surprised it still works LOL. Next I need to replace one of the hinge covers. Someday I'd like to replace the bottom shell as well.
