I just noticed this laptop on SonyStyle.ca. I used to have an SZ260 and now have an HP laptop (dv5-1157). I like that this Y-series is small and portable though.

When it comes to the processor, I know it's a 1.3ghz processor... what does this mean for performance for someone with the usage described below (basically typical average computer usage)? My current computer has a 2.0ghz processor, and I'm wondering performance wise if I'll be able to do the same things on a Y-series as I can on my current computer.

I use my computer for work, MS Office Suite, streaming video, media (movies, music, images), some very light image editing (Paint Shop Pro), and the usual internet/email/etc. I don't really play any games, unless you count the occasional spider solitaire and free online Tetris...lol.

Would it be a big performance downgrade going from my current computer to a Y-series?

it has an i5 processor, which is possibly faster than your current 2ghz processor, despite the frequency difference

it'll be fine for everything you listed, i'm guessing you won't notice much difference in performance

Oh, good to hear! I guess I placed too much importance on frequency difference and not type of processor.

But it's a low voltage i5, not the regular one.

In any case, I think it will be just fine for all of your aforementioned tasks, but you'll have to pay special attention to video/streaming video. This is the only area where you might run into trouble. It depends on the video chipset being used and the drivers. Flash 10.1 hardware acceleration is probably a must.

So if you can try it out and see if videos play smoothly for you, then I'd say you will be quite happy with its performance.

Thanks! I was actually just going to ask about video/streaming video. I need to be able to smoothly video conference, using Adobe Connect, for some school courses. I wonder if this computer will allow me to use video conferencing and streaming video smoothly.

Edit: According to the SonyStyle.ca website these are the graphics specs for the Y series (as of now we don't have a configurable/customizable Y series option):

Processor: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD Total Available Graphics Memory: 1759MB
Chipset: Mobile Intel® GS45 Express Chipset
Max. External Resolution via VGA: 2048x1536
Max. External Display Resoluton via HDMI™: 1920x1080
