I adore Sony and it would be nice to get a laptop from them for College. My price range is anything under 1600 and I'm in the USA.

    Thank You!:)

Personally, I would say the reasonably priced yet still portable model, like the Dell 640m.

Seems that college students nowadays have very fat budget and always want the high price item though and in that case get the mac book :)

The reason why I like sony is because of how reliable they are. I get the computer and it's just :D I do not need to do much with it. I really dislike Dell's, HP's, and compaqs. I'm thinking of an Apple but I'm not much of an artsy person so it kind of makes it a bit useless.

I think part of the reason there is a conception that College Students have a lot of funds is because of how expensive college is, so it's harder for the lower/working class to go so it moved up to middle/high class. Community Colleges are even expensive (140 a credit at the one near me) even though they are the schools that are suppose to provide for all classes.

SZ is very pricy to get the any features that make the line worthwhile imo (premium edition). See what your college reccomends. It doesn't seem like you have any reason to dislike Dell, HP, or Compaq for any reason other than their appearance. Maybe look at the Asus R1F if you're into tablets. Something tells me a macbook would also meet your needs perfectly. That "you need to be artsy to use a mac" is complete horsesh*t. I might actually reccomend it to you over a windows system, and i'm a big PC advocate.

The CR is an excellent device and a great value, however, the 14.1" screen may be a little large (unless you can get a 13.3 like on the C). You should go to a store and look at the sizes. You'll be amazed at how large a 15.4" really is!

And remember, every manufacturer is going to have people bashing its quality. I personally think toshiba makes very solid machines, and this is from personal experience rather than marketing spin.

OK, you're right... the Compaq I got in 5th grade and even though it was a bit slow it sure never died even after all I put it though. Heh, it was actually an amazing computer to deal with all that and it's little 8 gig harddrive sure did a lot. Dell's I dislike because everyone I know (or have en counted) who has one (excluding one family) has dealt with many problems from them... may it be the system itself to customer support. Apple's I see as artsy computers because that's all I've seen them used for before the advent of iPOD and the new laptop they have which soured their popularity along with the ability to use windows. I've also spoken to people about Apples and they say it's more of an art computer then a non-art one. I've also only used them for art so I always fleat that's what they were good at since it had many programs that preformed better on it, like photoshop for example.

Aesthetics really don't matter if the computer is nice. I'm sorry for knowing so little of computers and having very biased opinions yet I will love to learn more. Is a taplet when you can write on the screen? I'm sorry if that sounds really dumb but I rally don't know what that is VS a non-taplet laptop.

    ---sorry forgot to mention HP---

I do not believe they make nice computers. My laptop is now a paperweight because of how bad it was. The problems were ranging from it being broken (key doesn't work), to electrical, to internal things. Maybe mine just was an unlucky one but I really do not want to take that chance.

(gets our ruler) That dose look quite large.

I really like Sony; everything I have from them lasted (TV from when I was like 6... CD player doesnt ever skip or anything even though it's been around the block), customer service I Really enjoy (I've had problems with their CD players and they just sent me a new one as long as I had the recite, box and the product intact to prove it was their fault not mine.), and my desktop was pure heaven until PC Richards touched it yet it still works very well. I feel people dislike all the programs that come with it but for me it was an ultimate plus.

I would not agree that apples are just for artsy type people. I suspect, depending on your school, you will find many apple using souls in your department. Look for them outside on the lawn, eating their sandwich made with natural whole wheat bread with organic peanut butter. They will be using their apple to browse the BBC while eating their lunch and listening to some indy or classical music on their ipods. Do you really want to be the one who shows up with windows in your department? Of course, I'm kidding just a bit. I love my SZ and used to love my powerbook as well.

I plan on getting an SZ (w/ Geforce8) or a dell m1330 personally (whichever comes out first) but this is because I travel frequently and am a gamer. The reason I don't get a mac is because I'm a gamer and power user (and I generally don't like the "organic whole wheat" type :D ). Give OS X a chance, I think a user like you would love it. A mac can do anything you would want a PC to do. Just get a 13.3" one if you can (not sure what models they offer). The "artsy" idea is just a marketing strategy.

Let us know what you decide to get! Inquiring minds want to know. Someone else may be in the same situation and be reassured once they hear your decision. Good luck!
