Hey, got a x61 thinkpad, interested in what Sony have to offer regarding an alternative to the current x200 and futurecoming x201 (or x210).

At the moment i could get an x200 with a P8800 2.66GHz processor which weighs about 1.4kg and has some punch.

I really liked the Sony (x series i think) it was extremely thin. But with an intel atom processor it wouldn't have the performance i want.

I realise there's a tradeoff between performance and weight, but what are the more powerful light sony laptops?

    thanks

The Z-series is the best, bar none, for the kind of punch it provides but it will cost him a pretty packet. ;)

lenovo/ibm make the ugliest laptops in the business.
furthermore they're crap. eg. X61 which my friend has falling apart, held together by sticky tape.

the Z series is indeed your best bet for 13.1" ultra portables.
There is no real alternative if you want lightweight & power

I have a Z series. And I love it. BUT I hate the fact that I bought it in December, and now they released news about a new Z series for almost the same price and it's 300% better...... GRRRR

    Yeah, that certainly sucks. :(

I too was on the verge of flipping the switch in december, but folks on the forum cautioned me that a new Z-series, a new S-series (or whatever the SR series would have been called) and a new F-series (or whatever the new FW series would have been called) were imminent in January, and thus I decided to wait. If not, I too would have been gnashing my teeth right now.

True. The thing is though, Bestbuy will not be able to sell this until beginning of Summer. I'll be in Japan then... and i'm currently taking advantage of Bestbuy's no interest, no payment for 3 year deal. I refuse to pay upfront due to constant travel between Japan and Canada, that's just too much.

It was the best decision for my situation. BUT... 300-400% better? GAH! I'm still sad.

Think of it this way. If you want to replace wireless card, HDD, keyboard, or CPU in the future, then a Thinkpad is for you, because replacing these components will not void your warranty.
If you want to replace those components on a Sony laptop, you will void your warranty, and Sony reserves the right to refuse warranty service.
Believe me, one of my friends replaced the HDD on his Sony vaio right after he got it, and the laptop was refused warranty service when his laptop failed within the 1-year warranty period.
Sony - the most uncustomizable laptop ever.
Oh, I also forgot, Lenovo provides Win7 drivers for older laptops, while you need to get a new Sony Vaio if you want drivers for Win7.
