I just posted this in the what notebook should I buy forum but I think it should have been posted here better..

    Help me out here..
I just bought a Sony Desktop L series with an extra monitor

I am thinking of returning it and getting a new Vaio Z, add 2 monitors, and extra keyboard and mouse to use as a desktop. I already have another notebook.

Why? well the Z has a better processor, better hd (SSD) and will allow me to keep everything in one place (use laptop as desktop, etc)

Would you do this? How would the Z perform as a desktop? I know the specs are better than the L series but in reality would I benefit from the change?
    Thanks!

Which L series do you have, the new one? If I recall, the L uses a quad-core i7 as opposed to Z's dual-core version.

Your plan is basically exactly what I do - using the Z2 as a desktop replacement.

It's completely practical. The Z2 is a beast and you can't beat it for portability.

    The only caveats are:
    • To attach two monitors to the Z2, you need to use the HDMI ports on both the laptop itself and on the PMD (dock.) This means a little extra plugging in and out whenever you dock/undock. (Alternatively you can use the HDMI and VGA ports on the PMD, but you don't really want to power your monitor with VGA...)
    • Results are mixed with using the Z2 for playing modern games, so if that's one of your goals, the desktop (or a different laptop) might be better. This is a "developing story"; we'll probably know more about how to maximize gaming performance on the Z2 shortly.
    • The Z2 is a little noisy under load. It's dead silent for normal activities.

The L series has a 2720QM processor which is noticeably more powerful than the 2620M in the Z. So keep that in mind. :)
The GPU is faster as well.
I would suggest instead of getting a Z, add an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD to your L series and see it fly far beyond the performance reaches of a Z :D

    one clear question :

do you need portability ? if you answer yes, the answer is clear, get a Z :D

As antonyunus said, only get the Z if you need portability. You said you already have another laptop, so that doesn't sound like the case. The L also has a true quad core processor while the Z has a dual core processor.

The L is also touch screen. I don't know if this matters to you or not, but my family loves that feature (despite Steve Jobs making the decision for everyone that your arm would fall off if you'd use it on an iMac).
