What would you advise to do when I first receive the laptop? - remove bloatware - how?

Make the recovery disks. That would be my first job. Then delete what I don't want. Shrink the OS partition, maybe. Defrag and off you go.

as long as the the windows version youre going to install is the same as the one that came with the laptop then you can use the key on the bottom of the laptop.

oh and make sure you you charge the laptop to 100% then use till the battery dies out then charge again to 100% etc. etc....id say do this about 3 times..after that turn on battery protect so it only charges up to 80%

Some of the actions I take with a new system:
    1. Make your back-up DVDs (Recovery disks like Quackers already mentioned)
    2. Assuming you'll stick with the current install and not do a clean install then recommend the following:
    a. Download MSE and MBAM to replace what will come on your Sony - Most likely a trial or limited time version of Norton.
    b. Google for Norton Removal tool - yes you'll need it to make the Norton uninstall properly.
    c. Install and update, then full scan both MSE and MBAM - both are free and will provide you with antivirus and anti-malware protection.
    d. Hit Windows update - there will be some patches/updates likely for your system.
    3. Download and install CCleaner - great helper in removing bloatware which is next.
    4. Look thru Programs and Features - time to start removing what YOU know you do not plan to use or do not want - Trial versions are usually the first to go. Sony will have several apps installed - "most" are useful. That is really up to the end user.
    5. Sony Update - if one you chose to leave on there - then run it for new drivers or software.
    6. Run CCleaner after all is done and re-start
    7. Check out and run a website called Secunia - OSI - Consumer - Products
Run the scan and update any programs (flash etc) it tells you to.
    8. Install your software and files you want to run. (apps, games, pictures etc)
    Then...
    Enjoy your new lappy!

right thanks for that useful advice!!!!!!

Im guessing sticking with the current install and just removing unecessary programmes is far safer/better for a newbie then a clean install!

how do I actually make my back up DVD's? thanks

Check your Sony Apps - might be called Vaio Data Restore Tool or Recovery DVDs or something of the like - will normally need 3 DVDs to burn the 10GB stored in your hidden partition.

Will there be issues if I first uninstall bloatware and install some essentials, then create recovery disks?

No, the recovery disks are made from a hidden partition - will restore your laptop to the way it came out-of-the-box (bloatware and all). Apps you install are alos not on there. Solely the items Sony supplied with the laptop.

I do not believe that recovery discs are linked to the recovery partition. If you choose not to create a recovery partition, you can still create a recovery disc which will contained what is on your HDD/SSD, no link.
