I currently own a vaio c series notebook (specs in sig) and have the chance to get a vaio sz with a core duo 1.83, 1gb ram, 7400go/gma950 and 100gbhd. It is a year old... from a member on these forums actually.
I have about 2 months left on my costco return policy and can return my current rig for 994 usd. The sz would cost me 1k... so an out of pocket 6 dolllars.
I am not a pc gamer.. so is this upgrade worht it to you guys?
Opinions are appreciated.

That depends. Do you carry your laptop around a lot? If so, then yes do so....Actually, I would do it anyways, the SZ is a better laptop all around. Do keep in mind that the SZ will be more flimsy than the C because of the thinner plastic/magnesium casing used to reduce weight to 4.1lbs and also the keyboard will not be as good (more flex). I like that deal though, sounds good to me.

I would go with the SZ. Are the keys on the SZ a bit worn, or is it just me? You might be able to find a 200 series on eBay for about the same price.
-
those keys do look a bit worn.. you are right.
All things considered though with keys warn would you go for it?
The main attraction would be the better graphics card.. but i play NO pc games... my ps2, wii and ds take care of all my gaming needs.
Also the core duo 1.8 compared to core 2 1.66... which is better?
So should i bother with the purchase or just keep my computer?
Thanks
(also if you can link me to other sz's at that price .. that would be awesome) -
Hmm, the SZ is about 1lb lighter. The keys are slightly worn, but if you really want, you can get a replacement keyboard very cheaply, plus the CPU can be upgraded to a Core 2 Duo without much hassle.

If you are planning to keep the laptop for at least a couple years, I say the nVidia graphics card will come in handy. I'm not too sure which processor is better, I do know the Core Duo is 32-Bit, while the Core Duo 2 is 64-Bit. Members on this forum have said there's only a 10% performance increase. But of course you'll be better off with a newer processor in the long run. I'll look around on eBay, and PM with any auctions I find.

thanks for the feedback sponsi and vivek.. any more feedback from anyone would be appreciated =)

If you like the size, get the SZ. You can get a new keyboard from Sony for not too much money. I bought a SZ220 display model with similar specs about a month ago for $1k and I thought that was a good deal. I've been really happy with mine and the performance has been great. I understand you can upgrade these to C2D without too much trouble too.

For $6, yes please.

for me buying laptops over 1000$ (specially an used) the most important is the warranty. if the machine still has warranty then i'd say go for it. if not, you might want to think how bout if it fails after a few weeks? unless you actually know the previous owner took care of the laptop and if any problems occured during his use.
if it's a 500$ laptop maybe i could live with it. but for a >1000$ laptop...
that's why i got a brand new vaio with warranty instead of an used without warranty. you pay a bit extra but you get assured your machine will perform well for the long run and not to doubt if it'll be temporary. all this assuming your vaio is still under warranty for at least a year with costco?? -
Good point hpl..... other opinions still welcoe =)
-
bump.. still undecided...
What would you do?
