Hi all, which of the following power plans do you think is better for the VAIO SZ?

    - VAIO optimized
    - VAIO max battery
    - Balanced

You can check the settings for these power plans by clicking the battery icon on your task bar. Please also note that there are advanced settings which details policies such as Hybrid HDD power saver and processor power.

Please feel free to give any inputs/opinions :)

For a longer time without the charger, use max battery. If you always have it plugged in, I'd go Optimized.

I'd suggest balanced; although what xdominic89x said would be a good guideline; if you're always plugged in, go for the fastest and best performance since battery life wouldn't be an issue. If you're always on the go, then either balanced or max batt.
Balanced would be good if you want to save battery life, but don't wish to lower the performance of your SZ by that much.

Well, the only difference between VAIO optimized and balanced seems to be the hybrid HDD policy. Under VAIO optimized, the hybrid HDD doesn't spin down during low activity. Under balanced, the hybrid HDD spins down once in a while during low activity. So I guess my questions is, is it better to have the hybrid HDD spin down occasionally or is it better to have it constantly spinning?

the feature that enables the spin-down of hybrid HDD is called "Windows Hybrid Hard Disk Power Saving Mode"

Each power plan has settings for "on battery" and "plugged in" --- pretty easy to go in and pick your preferences for each. I keep mine on a modified version of "VAIO MAX BATTERY", and have set the settings so that it goes to a higher performance mode when plugged in.

    Today's word is: versatile! :)
