How come Sony says their S is something NEW when I just called some stores in Europe and they have for months now?? I remember seeing it in all around Europe, and now when I check the Sony website with their CES news (new products) the S shows up ...

" THE ALL NEW VAIO S-SERIES LAPTOP. AVAILABLE JANUARY 9" says on SONY.COM.

Also, is Sony at CES over?
I am a little disappointed with Sony if that's it, probably will get a Z that's available right now, I don't see anything else in the 13" territory to match it. Do you ?

2011 VW Jetta is not the same as a 2008 VW Jetta

    same goes with computers :p

New S has new hardware inside, same name though.

Sony signed some exclusive deal with Best Buy here in US so only one S model was available through Best Buy. I guess the exclusive agreement ended. Since this new-in-US S is not using Sandy Bridge, expect it to be replaced/gone some time in 2011.

It will have pretty much the same hardware (1st gen core i, nvidia/integrated graphics, intel 6200 etc.) if there is an update, I guess it'll just be a minor one which will make it the S14, upgrade from the current S13. i guess this is just for the US consumers since we can now configure it and get it in black/white. It's officially going for sale on January 9th starting at $899.

The S as others have said came in like two configs at Best Buy only, and both had WIDI, and the only difference was HDD space and cpu speed. It seems that the BB exclusivity is over and we may get the model with the nvidia 310m gpu(sadly its switchable gpu), which would be pretty sweet, and I am told now a lower price.
