According to the Sony website, right now they've got 137 units of SZ notebooks on clearance. I assume these are factory refurbs, and considering how few of these machines that have been sold right now 137 sounds like a fairly high number.

Does anybody have any idea how this number compares to other Sony models at an equivalent point in their product introduction schedule?

They are all on clearance not refurbished. Clearance are for machines that have not been sold before and are still brand new. Info from the outlet in regard to clearance vs refurbished.

"Sony Clearance and Refurbished products are top quality products that perform like new and are available at discounts.

"Clearance" products are new products that are being discontinued or replaced by newer models.

"Refurbished" products are typically customer returns which have been completely restored to their original factory specifications, fully tested and inspected by Sony factory technicians. Refurbished products may have minor cosmetic blemishes but they do not impact the performance of the product. Factory-Certified Refurbished Products come with a Limited Warranty covering 90 days, parts & labor."

So maybe Sony is retiring all the non-premium models??

They all seem to be SZ140s, so they are custom machines that were built. So they may have been denied credit cards, returns, etc. If it was 110s/120s/160s, it'd definitely be returns/refurbs.

    This isn't uncommon.

Fender is exactly right, I talked to Sony about this a week or two ago.
