Anyone have any news on those?

Really looking forward to those. I think that's when I'll upgrade my SZ680. I was really not happy with it until I installed Windows 7. Now, it's good enough until the Core i7's come out.

EDIT: the 2.66ghz core i7 runs at 130W, i think it's going to be tricky getting that into a laptop since a 2.8ghz core 2 duo currently runs at 45W and most other processors are at 35. i'm guessing they'll modify it for laptops

i wonder why i cant edit my posts =/

130W yikes. Guess the low power version will be later. Of course, with laptop sales surpassing desktops it would be great if Intel pushed out a low power version.

Word is that the laptop manufacturers are asking Intel to delay the release because of the economy. They arent selling as many high end processors in their laptops now and the near future doesnt look to be getting better. The i7 based laptops would be even more expensive.

Core i7 in laptops is never happening. When laptops get Nehalem starting in the fall, they won't be called Core i7, it will be Core i something else. Core i7 is reserved for desktops.

There will be a more energy efficient and less expensive Nehalem for desktops called Core i5, so maybe laptops will be Core i4 or i3?

Just to make a point of conversation:

Why assume a mobile Nehalem chip needs to be a quad? Lowering to two cores would lower the TDP, permit the implementation of the faster Nehalem archetecture, still sort of give "4 cores", still give the possibility of triple-channel DDR3... and more important to me than what ever Sony does, it should still give the excellent scaling when put in multi-GPU gaming laptops that the desktop Nehalem provides with the x58.

Indeed, Core i7s can be Quads or high clocked Dual cores.

Why do you need i7 (or next gen hardware) anyway?

All Nehalem processors have Hyper-Threading, so duals will act like quad cores.

Because they'd price it so high that it would make Alienware look like a Gateway.

The mobile Nehalem processor (45nm with memory controller & no more FSB) for laptop computers is called Auburndale. According to Wikipedia, it will be a 2-core 45/35 W processor, and its release has been delayed until Q1 2010 (citing expreview.com). The lower watt rating is still ~40% greater battery drain/heat than the current 25W chips in the Z, so I wonder if the upgrade will come even later.

It has a higher TDP due to the addition of the integrated graphics being connected to the cpu. Like with Intel's Pineview netbook processors, dual core Auburndale will be the cpu+gpu on one chip. Though it might use more power (until it switches to 32nm in 2010), it also has better power saving features than current Core 2 Duo's (like turning off cores completely).

Thanks for that info, that's encouraging. :) Do you know if the integrated GPU be included in all of the mobile Nehalem CPUs? That would seem to limit options for graphics processors in laptops.. Or will higher-end gaming/multimedia laptops all have switchable/hybrid graphics like the mbp/sony z/lenovo t400?

Only on dual cores (which launch in early 2010), quad cores which launch first in the fall will not have it.

I posted a thread about this in the off topic section where manufacturers have asked intel to delay nehalem in order for them to be able to move older stock out of the way. I think the thread got deleted :/

but with the economic downturn, who knows what intel will do.

Nehalem for laptops is delayed from July or August launch to September or October launch. Still is coming before the year is over.
