So I was just wondering. I am going to call up dell to return my inspiron 1520 for a Sony Vaio CR Series, maybe a FZ series laptop.

Where are they made? If it is made in Japan, i'd be happy. If it's made in china.. im pretty sure it'd be all crappy.

(Hey i can say that cuz im taiwanese)

Sony is a Japanese brand. They do have several headquarters here in the US.

Sony laptops are made by Quanta, ASUS, and Sony (Japan) depending on the model.

Quanta and Asus being Taiwanese companies, with facilities in China as well.

You can't win. Everything comes back to the mainland unless it says Made in Japan on the bottom. But even then, it's probably just assembled in Japan with all the components coming from everywhere such as Malaysia, Mexico, Taiwan, and you guessed it... China.

Sony, in my experience, is a company interested in quality.

That's for their desktops. I was wondering about their laptops. I heard they were of different quality, even though they are of the same brand.

Ha, yeah. But I think they're trying to improve. They have an online support chat, 24/7 phone representatives, etc. When I bought this PCV-RX650, they were charging for support on a per-call basis.

That said, they still have quite a way to go.

Just stay away from their studio amplifiers and PS2 that constantly break.

My only long-term experience with them is with computers.

    At least they're not Compaq...

I know that all of their T series notebooks, like TR, T, TZ, TX are all made in Japan. I think thats their only series that is exclusively made in Japan.

I think thats a stupid comment about "made in China". You being Taiwanese doesnt make it legit in any way. Do you know how much of the quality stuff is actually made in China? Including all the IT stuff. Just read some reviews of some Logitech and Microsoft high-end mice - again all made in China.
Have you seen Intel's research facilities in China...?

It reminds me of comments I often saw and still see from people writing that Laptop or IT components from Taiwan are not good quality. People need to get over their illusions about country specific quality.

chillax man, all im saying is that I have a strong belief that if it was made in japan it would be of higher quality. I dont give a crap if you feel that way or not.

My Fujitsu Lifebook P5020D was made in Japan and of mediocre built quality, I was worried about it falling apart at times but I haven't had trouble since with my "Made In China" laptops. The stereotype that things made in China are of inferior quality especially compared to Japan and whatnot holds less and less by the day. Sorry your so adamant about how you feel.

All of their BTO notebooks are built down in San Diego. The TX/TZ and UX's are built over in Japan. Some of the "set" models of their notebooks also are assembled in Japan before being shipped over, but I don't have a complete list of those on hand. (Example the VGN-SZ470N/C)

My SZ460 is made in japan according to the sticker on the back of my laptop.

I kind of disagree Made in China parts are inferior to Made in Japan parts. And I m strongly disagree about Made in Taiwan could be better than Made in China.

China made the majority of the consumer products for the mass market in the US and many of them are superb!

When it comes to the quality of a product, where is it made is important, but how does it made, what's the specs, and how does it put together is equally important if not more.

I do believe there are something on our Japanese made laptops are superior to the other chinese made VAIO line. But then, our laptops cost more than the mainstream VAIO laptop as well.

You get what you pay for is what I m after :)

i'm pretty sure most people believe things that are made in japan are superior to that made anywhere else given their proven track record. sony may be using this to their advantage by selling budget line computers assembled in china and the top tier more expensive computers assembled in japan just to earn more money.

in the end it's all about quality control. perhaps sony invests less QC money for their chinese plants to pass the savings on to the consumer. or perhaps they invest the same amount on both ends. or perhaps more in their japanese assembling plants. only the executives know

until there's a side-by-side comparison of the same make and model laptops but made in different countries we'll never know. but i do know this. blank media made in japan is a lot superior to that made in china/taiwan as there are extensive tests to prove so.

the recent bettery recalls were on batteries made in both china and japan

nowadays we should interpret "made in x" to mean "assembled by robots using parts from everywhere in x"

I can only speak to my experience with "made in japan" vs "made in china" vaios.

My s380p/b (made in japan) was superior to my fs920 (made in china) in every tangible respect. Build quality, fit and finish, keyboard, display- (although to be fair it was x-brite vs x-brite "eco", that is 2 lamps vs 1 but not just brightness, better quality display); and even with the same processors, the s380 ran much cooler DESPITE having discrete graphics in a much smaller case (150 vs 210 cubic inches)!

Of course you can attribute all of the above to the fact that the s was a premium line, and the fs a budget line, and sony just happened to make the former in Japan. But whether it's because of the Japan facilities' qc or the designs they were sent execute (or a little of both)- the higher quality notebooks don't come from china. As always imo, sdbafd, because ymmv.

That was back in the day. Now, they are cutting corners to reduce cost and increase profit margins.

Not to mention their extensive use of plastics and large AC adapters.

Sometimes, it would be interesting to see where products are made since you can get a guesstimate of how much of your dollar goes back to the company.
