I believe that Sony considers all of its various regions as totally distinct, so you'd have to return your US Vaio to the US to get it fixed. I think there's an exception in the form of VOS (Vaio Overseas Service) - available from the Japan region and which gives you a year's warranty worldwide. I'm not sure of the details but warranty hassle is one of the things that makes importing less attractive. :(

I think that with most companies they respect the manufacturers warranty so you will have to wait after your years Sony US warranty to expire to be covered with them.

Domestic and General is probably the biggest company that does these things. You can buy an extended warranty from them and be covered for accidents immediately but they won't cover any hardware related issues until your Sony warranty runs out. This might be your best bet and hope that you do not have any problems that are major within the first year.

It might be worth getting a quote here

I've checked and that's right, they only start to cover after the extinction of the manufacturers. Unfortunately, the cost is mad: around 10% of the value of the laptop for just one year. That's more than a 3year extension from Sony... Plus they don't say if they cover equipment bought outside the UK...
