Thinking of getting an SR from the US, but wondering what my options are for warranty?

I believe that Sony considers all of its various regions as totally distinct, so you'd have to return your US Vaio to the US to get it fixed. I think there's an exception in the form of VOS (Vaio Overseas Service) - available from the Japan region and which gives you a year's warranty worldwide. I'm not sure of the details but warranty hassle is one of the things that makes importing less attractive.

I think that with most companies they respect the manufacturers warranty so you will have to wait after your years Sony US warranty to expire to be covered with them.
Domestic and General is probably the biggest company that does these things. You can buy an extended warranty from them and be covered for accidents immediately but they won't cover any hardware related issues until your Sony warranty runs out. This might be your best bet and hope that you do not have any problems that are major within the first year.

This looks interesting i think that it could include hardware repairs and for a premium you could add in accidental damage as well the price does not seem that unreasonable either. I don't know who the underwriters are for this insurance package.

If you want to buy an accidental damage warranty package as well then this maybe interesting.
