Apparently my new CTO Z2 shipped today as my CC was charged. I called to try and get an update so I would have an idea how long it would take to arrive and was told it was shipping from "the orient".
Just curious as to where the CTO Z's are built/shipped and how long does delivery typically take once shipped. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Will

As mind-boggling as it may be, the CTO laptops are shipped directly from where they are assembled in China. In my case, probably a week or more elapsed between my CC being charged and my SE actually being shipped out -- you'll know when this occurs, because you'll receive a tracking number. The shipment was by FedEx and arrived within a few days thanks to express handling.

Z2 is built in Japan, same as the Z1 was.

Until year or so, all CTO models were assembled in San Diego, US. Last I heard this facility has been closed.
Bottom sticker on my VGN-Z590 (first gen Z) says "Made in USA with foreign components". Mine was shipped from San Diego, OCT 2008.
As for whole procedure, they need typically 7-8 business days to process (assemble) your order, and 1-2 days (depending on your location) for shipment to your doorstep.

I have tracking info now. Looks like it is coming from Japan. Shipped today scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. Not bad.

My F23 shipped from China. Before anyone screams "OMG China," so did my MacBook Pro 15, which cost more than twice as much.

I was skeptical about the build quality, but I am pleased to say that it matches if not exceeds the build quality of my VGN-P688E/N which was built in Japan.
If I am given the choice I'll buy the Japan made model every time. That choice seems to be limited now to only the Z series. -

My SA was shipped from Japan (so I'm guessing built there aswell), before going to the Netherlands to go onto the European shipping system.

I'm not disagreeing, just curious. -
^sometimes bad vibes don't wear off. Years ago, you'd avoid China mfr'd goods like the plague. Before that, you'd avoid Japanese products. Today they are both well capable of building quality products.

I have friends that are afraid of Japanese products because of the nuclear meltdown... -
Is "uninformed" a more pleasing synonym for stupid?

I just feel like the Japanese made stuff is better. Isn't there a reason they make the Z in Japan? If China was just as good they'd make the Z there also.
Made in Japan sounds special, Made in China sounds like crap. -
I remember when Made in Japan was synonymous with crap. Things change. I prefer made in Japan myself on account I'm not crazy about buying stuff made by near-slave labor. In terms of quality though, it all depends on what the design specs are and how well the assembler's QA/QC controls work.

Your friends get more radiation each and every time they go through airport security than they'd get walking around Japan near the reactor, not to mention buying something that was manufactured somewhere in Japan. -
z13 ordered dec 2010 (before tsunamis and all that =x), shipped through several places in Japan before being sent to final destination as "IP Direct Distribution" package. Sadly they deleted all the tracking details, so i can't say for sure where those places what, but they were basically all sounding like something straight out of Deus Ex Human Revolution china stages...
If you flip the notebook to underside, and check the big black sticker on the left, it should say where it was manufactured. mine says
Factory ID: SNT
Made in Japan.
There is also a image code square thing there, which you could use your phone to decode, not sure what that does, maybe sends you to sony.jp . -
Arrived. Departed Japan on Friday and delivered before noon on Monday. I forgot how much I love to migrate to a new computer!

Oi, I ordered mine on the 10/16 and got an estimated ship date of 11/2. Then on 10/22, the status updated to "Your VAIO is being built" and I got an estimated ship date of 10/21....
I called on 10/24 and they emailed me saying that the estimated ship date is 11/3. The website still has an estimated ship date of 10/21.
What in the world takes so long anyway? Just give me the parts, it will take me 5 minutes. -
With Textiles China is the preferred 3rd world country with a lot of stuff now being made in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh which are the worst quality. I always look for 'made in China' with clothes except of course clothes from Europe.

Every time I see the title of this thread I imagine storks delivering Vaio computers.

Young Doc: No wonder this circuit failed. It says "Made in Japan".
Marty McFly: What do you mean, Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan.
Young Doc: Unbelievable.

A: Lucas refrigerators.
Where do CTO laptops ship from?
