    Hi,
I just got VAIO L with Windows 8, I want to upgrade HDD to my own SSD and install clean version of Windows 8, I downloaded all drivers from Sony.
But I cannot locate Windows 8 activation code sticker, in my previous laptops, there was Windows 7 activation code sticker on the bottom.
What about Windows 8? does it have different situation?

    Thanks

    Did you ask Sony support?

Ask Sony, is my Windows 8 genuine? If so, where is the sticker?

There are utilities on the net that let you backup your Windows 7 license and restore it after a clean intall. Maybe there is something similar for Windows 8. Google for that if no joy from Sony support.

I just called Sony by phone, some guy from Sony told me there's no stickers for Windows 8 on machines, Windows 8 is different, you need use Sony recovery.

That sounds fishy to me. Every laptop or Desktop PC I've ever seen has a COA on it proving the OS is legitimate. I can't imagine MS has opted to change this. I would call Sony and demand a license key since that's what you paid for when you purchased it.

I found in some forums I'm not sure about that the product key is saved in machine BIOS, Windows 8 will be activated automatically if you install it in the same machine.
I will give it a try.

I just texted my brother-in-law and he said when he cleaned installed Windows 8 on this Dell that he had to look it up that way as well. (He purchased a laptop with a SSD and mechanical drive and they installed the OS on the mechanical!)

Let us know if you can find it that way. Curious if this is the standard or if it only worked on his Dell.

Because of the new activation system microsoft uses, instead of SLIC they didn't put sticker at all on new laptop. however, what you can do is backup your license using Advanced Tokens Manager and then re apply it on your fresh install if needed. generally if you install the same version that you have, in the same machine, you just need to input your serial and it will work fine. so you just use Advanced Tokens Manager to get your serial.

This just seems like a ploy to make it difficult for people to install fresh images on their machines. I personally never use the backup provided by the manufacturer because I can't stand all the bloatware.

There is no more product key sticker at the bottom.
Now, there is just a small hologram Windows 8 sticker.
