I just did a fresh windows install and all the drivers are there, but I can't find the power management application or the drivers that control the function keys for the brightness and volume.

    any help is greatly appreciated.

LOL, I just came here to ask the same question! I've looked at Sony's site, of course, but can't find it, you'd think it would be readily available.

I just purchased an older used PCG-FX190 and would hope any Sony Power mgmt. utility would work.

    Hope we get some response.

I was really hoping someone would respond to this. I can't believe one can't download these apps somewhere. They should be on the Sony site.

I've gotten no replies to this question on my other forum either. If I do, I will post it here too.

Perhaps today, someone will help us out.

Well, it would help if either one of you can clarify what laptop you are using...these programs are machine specific, you know.[8)]

I gave my model # PCG-FX190 - it's a Sony Vaio. I was hoping one app might fit all.

On another forum folks were using 3rd party apps for power management, but like Raysmd, I'd like to be able to use the function keys.

    http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PCGFX190&UpdateType=Everything&SelectOS=

Select your OS, then download the "Power Panel" & "Hot Key" utilities. You may need to install some "pre-requisites" like Sony Shared Library or Sony Utility DLL Library.

I promise, I did check this page a few times before whining. I now see the Hot Key and Library dll downloads but I cannot find Power Panel in that list - am I blind? Ah, I just checked under Win2k and it IS there, but I'm using WinXP - is that a problem? Can I use the 2k app?

I would not have known to get the library dlls, should I install them first or wait to be prompted?

Apologies to Raysmd, I didn't mean to hijack this thread, I hope he is getting the same good help as I am and that it applies to his case as well.

    thx,

You could try using the Win2K version of Power Panel. I don't know if it will work or not. You could also look at the download section of other FX's. Sony is not very good at putting the files in the right places. If all else fail, google it or post on multiple Sony forums and see if someone can send you a copy from his/her recovery kit.

The shared library should be installed prior to installing other Sony softwares.

Good suggestion about checking the other Fx download pages.

I've already tried googling for the app. I'll check for some other Sony forums too. I know this one is more interested in new machines, but I appreciate the help.

    thanks

Raysmd started this post but never posted again so I will respond.

With Skyshade's help I finally saw the apps I needed on the sony download page after selecting my model. I also found powerpanel in the win2k OS section even though I'm using XP. I installed it but I don't think it's a perfect match to XP so I only run it when I want to change something.

I also found the function key app there but haven't installed it yet.

I plan to start another thread to better understand the mechanics of power management, ie: is it good to constantly turn the hard disks off and on?

How did you get Power Panel for Win2k to work for XP? I kept trying to install the program but it keeps telling me that it is meant for Win2k and not XP. So then it cancels itself out.

I'm new to XP but heard about Compatability mode. I ran it through their wizard, but I couldn't really figure out if it had really done anything. I used it on the install .exe first(as instruted in Help) and bam, it installed. Unsure about it all I did the Compatability wizard again after install.

Things blinked out and acted odd for a few minutes. I decided I would not have it run automatically on startup and it seems to be fine now when I need to make a change.

AAHX, If you go to the driver/software page: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=1,24,26,66,9,70,5

you can put in your model # and OS you are using, from there find the right software. I assume your lappy is newer so you might have an easier time finding the right stuff.

I apologize because I think I posted the link that already had MY model # selected(upper left corner).

So far I've successfully gotten the .dlls, the PowerPanel app (win2k version) and the hotkey utility. However not all the buttons are activated so I must be missing something - I think it might have to do with the Sony Setup Utility which I didn't install, I wasn't sure what it was. Seems like one should do that first. But hey, what do I know. Anybody?

I'm a noob to laptops and this one is used so I'm just feeling in the dark.

    good luck

Oh man, wouldn'tcha know. My PCG-FX190 is the only model not listed. When I put in the #s it said it was for European models. I clicked around a bit and some of the links didn't work for me, not sure why, perhaps my browser's acting up.

I did find a tutorial on the Sony Setup Utility which I might install today.

Nice site though. I did discover that this book came out in 2001 and was originally $3600. With this beauty sxga screen I think I got quite a bargin at $400!
