right, so i went on newegg, took a closer look at the pictures and all i see is a 'core 2 duo inside' sticker. I went through the pictures on a review done by a fellow member on the forum and it simply had the old core 2 duo sticker on it as well.
Aren't the new vaios all Centrino 2 certified? and should therefore don the centrino 2 sticker? or am i missing something?

Nah, Centrino 2 won't be stickered untill they add in the wireless to the chipset. Its not fully functional centrino 2 yet.
-
the whole pakage(intel wireless, chipset and processor)gets the centrino 2 sticker other wise u get the normal one.
-
well but the SR has all 3 doesn't it?
i'm buying mine in Singapore tomorrow. And i'm pretty sure the one here (using the HK spec sheet) has "Wifi Link 5100" a 5000 series wireless standard required for centrino 2?
doesnt the SR129E/B have that? -
If you have any doubts about the authenticity of your CPU use CPU-Z or another program to verify that you got what you paid for.
Those stickers are a pain to take off without marring the palmrest. It sounds like they saved you the trouble - shouldn't you be happy?
It would be better for them to be affixed to the bottom of the notebook instead. There's just something wrong about running Ubuntu and having the Vista sticker staring up at you all the time. -
i actually like the stickers
. ANd even then, they dun hand it to me all clean and nice, they stuck the old core 2 duo sticker instead of the centrino 2 one. If it were u, and u had no choice but to haf a sticker on ur palmrest, would u rather the old core 2 duo or centrino 2 sticker?
i'm a bit confused right now. in America it's SR129, in HK it's the SR16, in Singapore it's going to be the SR13, in AU its the SR16 as well. But under specs, only the HK SR16 lists WiLink 5100 as a component. -
this seems funny to me, you can put the sticker with a 5100 which seems weaker than the older AGN card which the SR on newegg has..
maybe I am missing something..
I totally agree.. -
Didn't the people who had ordered and received their SR-129EB have confirmed that it comes with an Atheros wireless card??? You are not going to get Centrino 2 sticker with that...
-
ill sell you my sticker for.......1 MILLION DOLLARS

Any downfall to the atheros wireless chipset? Will it come with all the configuration as in the new centrino 2 chipset?
-
Correct. Sony put out the CR129 and the FW139 out as models to have on the street right away, because of the delay that they already had because of Intel.
Officially I believe, no Centrino 2 notebooks can start shipping until next week, but by putting in the Atheros wireless card they were able to get a model on the street early and in the hands of the consumers, because it is not officially a Centrino 2 notebook.
I'd expect once the stock runs out on these little models, we won't see any Atheros from Sony again for a while, unless another situation like this comes up. They seem to be pretty tight with Intel. -
"Officially I believe, no Centrino 2 notebooks can start shipping until next week"
That makes sense actually....what secret info leads you to believe that's the case?
Thanks, -
Duke was right! Should have listening to me when I told you all to be careful about the unusually early shipment of newegg model SR129EB instead of calling me an idiot and a "anti-newegg crusader". Please..I was only trying to help out. Anyway....
I'm just kidding.. Who even knows if there is a significant difference... But I knew there had to be SOME kind of difference.. -
Well it's never a good idea to rush into things anyways.

Honestly, I've used Atheros wireless cards quite happily for the past year, so I'm not sure what the problem could be with this? My SR arrived a few days ago from Newegg, and no problems at all so far. I hate all those )@*#$)(*) stickers anyway, so they all get removed (for those interested in doing the same, there are a couple of threads in the cosmetic modifications forum with some good tips). I decided to get it earlier to take advantage of the instant rebate before it expired (can't afford to wait until mid to late August), so this still seems like a good deal to me.
-
yea from what i've read atheros is a pretty good company
-
From what I've read so far the Intel 5100 card is not going to perform any better than the previous gen card. What it is going to provide is a lower cost to the manufacturer. Atheros cards have a tendency to have better reception than the Intel cards, but at the cost of power usage. I don't know how the the Atheros card in the SR stacks up against the Intel 5100, but so far for me it seems to work fairly well. FYI, I had my SR open the other day, and the WiFi card is a half height mini-PCI express card. In other words you can't install one of the older WiFi cards they are too large.
-
I wondering if i get this notebook could i later upgrade the wireless card. I would like to eventually change the card to an Intel 5150 for wifi and wimax. Do you think it's possible and was it easy to open?
Where's the Centrino 2 Sticker on your SR?
